Interesting projector solution

So basically it is a 1080p DLP projector (that in itself is pretty nice) but it comes with it's own video input box. Basically the box takes all your inputs (DVR/consoles/computer) and converts everything to 1080p, and then via a single HDMI cable that is transferred up to the projector. That's a really nice solution, IMHO. It also had HDMI output so you can output to a receiver and just use the Optoma video converter box as your main hub. I wonder if you can buy just the box. For a couple hundred bucks, that'd actually be kinda useful. Especially since it supports de-interlacing, something Dell decided wasn't important enough to include with my monitor.

It looks like the unit retails for $4k or $5k with an included anamorphic converter.

Wouldn't a decent A/V receiver and/or outboard video processor do the same exact thing, and more, for less?

Yeah, I was wondering why you would connect all of those things to this hub and then to your receiver... isn't that the point of a receiver? Does it up convert everything using better algorithms than most receivers or something?

I doubt it's as good as a dedicated outboard video processor like a DVDO, but those go for $1k or more. A decent AV receiver with video upscaling will run $300-500.

Can you show me a receiver that takes a VGA input?
Also, it's hard to tell whether a particular receiver will do upscaling properly. Some only do HDMI pass-through, some only will digitize analog inputs without actually scaling.

No, but there are plenty of video processors that do, albeit they aren't cheap. I wonder how good the breakout box on that projector is?

True. Frankly I do not understand the whole upscaling thing on mid-priced receivers. We've got DVD players that upscale, TVs that upscale, do we really need receivers that do it too? Anyone who's *that* serious about video processing buys an outboard video processor or a several thousand dollar A/V receiver.
