Your favorite/best looking Blu-Ray

Mon Jul 27, 2009 8:53 am

I bought my dad a Blu-Ray player for his birthday and thought that I might as well get him his first movie to go along with it. I was about to pick up a copy of The Dark Knight when I remembered that he might already own it on DVD. My mom is going to double-check for me to see if he already has it, so I'm shopping around for other titles just in case. I've already checked out the AVS Blu-Ray PQ thread, but I was curious if you guys have any other suggestions?

So far, here are my picks:

The Dark Knight - in case he doesn't already own it
Band of Brothers - Holy Jebus...I didn't think it could get better than the DVD, and I was wrong.
Wall-E - I own this and it looks amazing, and my dad is a big fan of Pixar.
The Usual Suspects - Keyser Söze!
Black Hawk Down
Casino Royale

Any reason why you said this? I own Wall-E and it looks amazing. Given that both of my parents loved this movie (and Pixar in general) and they babysit my kids often, who also love the movie, it's a top contender. My dad is also a big Bond fan and really liked Casino Royale, which is another quality BD transfer.

Casino royale is a free DVD
it comes with a new laptop, PS3, and many bluray players last year
so you can pick it up used for cheap I am sure
but if u really like the movie and think there is value in purchasing it, sure grab it
@ I just checked amazon.com and u can get it brand new for 11$, so sure go for it

If they like Wall-e then you could also grab the Pixar Shorts, which has almost all of thier short films over the past years as well as some cool extras with how they make the movies and whatnot. It would be great for kids too.

Im pretty sure Wall-e or maybe one of his cousin bots makes an appearance in one of the short films too :D

Bah. Don't buy him movies based on visual wow factor. He's a Dad. Get him Dad movies. 2001, The Wild Bunch, The Professionals, any/all of the Connery Bonds, The Dirty Dozen, Battle of the Bulge, Dirty Harry, Patton, Planet of the Apes (1968), Bullitt, etc.... :)

Clockwork Orange actually looks FABULOUS.
Watchmen looks good
Coraline looks fantastic
Wall-E like you said is amazing.
Lost - I only have season 3, but comparing it to Season 2 and 1 on DVD it looks MUCH better.

Thats actually all I own right now, I think... I got the $98 Magnavox BR player at Walmart. VERY good deal. Sure, it doesn't do BD-Live, but my lady friend an dmyself are both in our late 20's with no kids. We want to watch movies, not play games on the DVD player.

Those can have their own wow factors...good transfers of old movies are nice.

Also, I guess I must be a "Dad" without the kids, since I've probably watched half of that list on blu-ray.

I have Dirty Harry and Bullit waiting for me at home from netflix. Since we've moved we've had better luck with blu rays not arriving broken. It took 3 tries to get a non-broken Dirty Dozen, which was tremendously annoying.

Dirty Harry rocks. I didn't really enjoy Bullit much, but maybe that's because my expectations were set too high before watching it. Both films, however, look great on BD. Strong colors, contrast, sharpness, and natural film grain...they look like films of their day, not over-processed digital crap.

I ended up getting him Blade Runner, and he loves it. I watched about half of it, and the PQ is very good. Even if you're not a fan of the film, you would appreciate the transfer.

Agreed, I left that one off the list, but it is definitely a good'un.I am not a fan of Blade Runner. At least, I wasn't the first time I saw it. Now, I think it's a pretty darn good movie. The BD restoration is nothing short of amazing, especially when compared to the DVD, and considering you get all five versions of the movie for $30, it's quite the deal.
