I am looking for a good Blu-Ray player that will allow me to playback video files from a USB port.

Recommendations?

Or maybe a player than will let me stream video content from my compter to play it.

Either way, I would be very happy.

PS3 will do all of those things.

This onewill do it too, but at $299, you might as well get a PS3 even if you don't use it for games. I know several people that just use it as a media centre

I'm by no means a PS fanboy, but for blu ray functionallity, it stands pretty tall above the rest

I already have a PS3 in the house, I am looking for something for my Home Theater.

The PS3 is no where near the Home Theater by the way.

So... then you have a device that will do all the things you were asking about?

Yes, but its no where near the Home Theater and the boy of the house uses it constantly for his games, I want something that I can use exclusively with my home theater.

Are you not allowed to have two can openers in your house or two hard drives in your computer, too? If you're not going to get what you want for under $300 anyway, you might as well add a PS3 since it not only does what functions you want, but it does them exceptionally well.

And you can play games with the boy over the LAN. (^_^)

You guys are making a pretty damned convincing argument for the PS3.

Are there are remote control options other than the game controller?

Theres a number of little networked boxes that will play all sorts of video over your network. All for around 100 bucks. Like the Western Digital WD TV Live for $120. Gizmodo had a great article about a number of these things http://gizmodo.com/5397986/hd-media-pla ... tv-killers

Absolutely. You can get one of the Logitech Harmony remotes and there is a specific adapter for the PS3 that will allow you to turn the unit on and off remotely. Far superior to the official Sony Remote.

Shortages man! Shortages!
Do you want to be guilty as some kid don't get his own PS3 for birthday?!

"We're working very hard with our retail partners to meet consumer interest, but the demand is tremendously high for the PS3 and we expect tight inventory in the coming months," he said.
Online retailer Amazon has even changed its policy by allowing customers to only purchase one 120GB unit per household.
"As you may know, the PlayStation 3 120 GB is in great demand," the listing says. "In an effort to provide as many customers as possible with the opportunity to purchase PlayStation 3 120 GB, we are limiting the total number of PlayStation 3 120 GB units that can be purchased. As a result, each household may only purchase one PlayStation 3 120 GB unit."

There's a couple out there sub-$200; depending on your timeframe for purchase, Best Buy has an halfway-decent Insignia-branded unit that plays MKVs and AVIs, has Wi-Fi, etc for $180 normally, but goes a lot lower from time to time.

Can the PS3 play movies straight from a USB? Last I heard it does not!

Looks like this LG player will do it.

It also has a Network connection, but only to access on-line streaming stuff (Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Pandora, and CinemaNow). It will not access files on your local network. Which is a shame really, it would be the only missing thing on it to be perfect for my needs.
