Photos of big racks!

First time really working on my photos. Went to Rocky Mountain National Park before dawn. After 2 hours of frustration due to distances, these guys were behind me. I'm completely new to the world of dslr's, so its my first attempt shooting wildlife on the Apperture Priority Setting.

Sony a560, Minolta 70-210 f/4 lens (the ubiquitous Beercan)
Auto Correct in PMB, ISO200, f/4.5

Auto Correct in PMB, ISO700, f/7.1

No Auto Correct, ISO100, f/4

Pretty thrilled with the Beercan. Any critique/advise is welcome. Just be gentle, I'm new.

I don't know what is worse - the fact that I was disappointed by the kind of "racks" pictured, or the fact that I was expecting them to be server racks in the first place.

Yeah, I was expecting a massive blade server rack =/

I know. I wanted to see shots of some stacked servers! Maybe even a shot from the back, or two, showing the network cables. I can post pics of one small rack.

You guys are nerds...see, at least I notices that this is in the Visual Haven subforum, so I was expecting monitor mounting of some sort.

For those disappointed in the picture content, check out /r/GeekPorn on Reddit. You'll get your fix there.

Anywho....nice pics, TheEmrys!

was sort of expecting server racks as well. :P

it's great that you were excited to get up early to go photograph wildlife, wish I had access to that near where I lived.

for the first 2 pictures, the exposure would have been a bit difficult to get right due to the extreme contrast between the bright sunlight falling on the grass and the dark shadows. if you shot RAW, you can sort of blend the two back to make the contrast less obvious. for the second picture, focus is on the grass in front of the deer(?), you might want to try playing around with individual focus areas on your camera, only because DSLRs with the larger sensor provide a greater depth of field, it's easy to get out of focus if that's not your intended subject. 3rd picture has great composition, love that you get eye contact, small issue with the picture being underexposed. you can compensate quickly for that on aperture priority using exposure compensation, say +1 EV to brighten up the subject. you may need to boost ISO a bit to compensate for the reduced shutter speed.

i know it sounds rather technical but hope this helps. :)

Thanks much. I know the focus is a bit off on #2 and #3 and the lighting was a bit of a challenge. I did shoot them in RAW, so I may have to do some PP. I actually shot them MF, which was a lot of fun.

I'm excited to go back up next week. The rut is starting and the herds get BIG. As it was, I was pretty thrilled to see a bull with 2 bucks, as well as the other 3 in the bugle shot.

Good idea on the EV. It was kinda rough being there at 5am and as the sun rose, the light went a bit crazy. Gotta get used to my ISO button by feel.

Since you got the focus target correct in Pic #3 and chose a good depth of field, it has a lot of RAW post-processing potential. Add brightness, shift the color temperature to something a bit warmer, and then increase the saturation slightly and it will jump right off the screen.

This thread does not deliver, and someone needs to be perma-banned for using misleading subject title!

Seriously, though, those are nice photos, but I'm guessing you had the "HDR" function disabled in your camera?

I played with this a bit. I'll post it up once photobucket lets me upload again.

Terrible pictures, but I saw two sets of elk fighting at the same time. Hadn't seen that before. It was pretty early, ISO is set at 1600 and its at 300mm handheld. I'm kinda surprised I got anything.

The Sony sensor, on-body IS and auto-focus well at work!

I find shooting at 300mm to be a challenge in and of itself worthy in comparison to rifle marksmanship; a steady hand goes a long way, IS or not.

Definately the on-body IS is amazing. I've picked up a 2x TC that I can use with my 70-210/4 that'll give me 420/8. On a tripod I might be able to get some better shots. Those meadows in RMNP are pretty huge.

Wildlife is definitely on my list; as is the hiking involved, when I have time and find a partner, of course :).

I am embarrased at how easy it was to take those photos. As in, I-was-in-the-back-of-my-pickup-parked-in-a-parking-lot-easy.
