Photokina 2014!

Mon Sep 15, 2014 2:08 pm

So, lots of news and releases. Looks like Canon came out with a new body, the 7Dii, and a couple of lenses. The 400/4 looks to be the most interesting, but there is a place for the 24/2.8 STM. They also released their answer to Sony's RX100ii. I am curious to see how it performs. Nikon seems quiet. Olympus has released the 40-150/2.8 (looks awfully good), but not yet announced the 300/4. Panasonic has an a very interesting LX100, which as a P&S, has a full sized micro 4/3 sensor in it. May be a real winner for P&S quality. Sony came out with several lenses, the 16-35/4 (looks good, but not my type of lens), Zeiss 35/1.4,Zeiss 28/2, and a G 90/2.8 Macro. I hope the 35/1.4 prices drops the price of the 35/2.8. That tiny lens would make my a7 fit in my jacket pocket.

Anything else seen that is of interest?

Can't wait to see reviews hit the web.

Nikon is slicing the full-frame DSLR pie ever thinner with the D750, which combines yet another 24MP sensor with the autofocus system of the D4S and the control scheme of the D610 and D7100. The D750 is also the first FX SLR from Nikon with an articulated screen. The pro DX body update that everybody seems to be clamoring for remains nowhere to be seen.

Nikon also announced a new wide lens, a 20mm f/1.8, for FX cameras. It might make for a good 30mm FOV lens on DX, but I doubt that many people will buy it for that purpose.

Leica announced a new limited-edition M camera, the M Edition 60, which is a digital M rangefinder without a screen. It's pretty silly. It's also $20k. I'm sure they'll sell the entire production run.

Samsung announced a pro-oriented, APS-C mirrorless body, the NX1, along with a 50-150mm f/2.8 zoom. This is actually a really interesting product. It's capable of 15 FPS with autofocus, it has AF sensors over 90% of the frame, and it's fully weather-sealed. It'll be interesting to see whether this camera makes people begin to take Samsung seriously as a player in the high-end market.

The EOS 7D Mark II is probably the biggest, most anticipated news from the show this year.

Nikon's D750 looks fairly interesting, but I am not sure of where it fits.

The 7DII is, so far, underwhelming. Its a 70D with more FPS. Its also like an a77ii, but no articulating screen. Sure, the tracking AF is probably going to be a bit better, but its also at lower fps. Same small 20mp sensor (it may be *new and improved*, but we'll see). The high ISO performance may be acceptable, but it won't be significantly more than the a77ii. And its price? $1800 body only. Its $800 more than the Sony. It seems that Nikon has abandoned the higher end APS-C market (no 7200, and there may be a 7300 coming, but who knows?). Canon has disappointed me. I really hoped for some big, high density sensors to be announced. Something around 40mp, even up to 50mp. But nothing. Just more of the same.

Samsung's model really intrigues me. I really need to see more on that. Got any good resources on it?
