Would it be wise to dial back my OC?

Fri Dec 11, 2015 3:36 pm

Worried that my CPU/GPU are running hotter than they should. Results via CPUID HWMON and GPU-Z after a few runs of 3DMark Firestrike, Unigine Heaven 4, Unigine Valley.

CPU: Core i5 6600K overclocked to 4.3 GHz, voltage is default to 1.2V. Gets up to 59 C with an Asetek 510lc liquid cooler.
GPU: R9 390 overclocked to 1040 core/6120 memory, voltage at default 1.225V. Gets to up 75C with the PowerColor PCS+ cooler which spins from 75-83% depending on the load. VRMS 65-70 C.
Ryzen 7 1800X - Corsair H60i - GA AB350 Gaming - 32GB DDR4 2933 at 16,16,16,36 - GTX 1080 at 1924 / 5264 (undervolted) - 250GB WD Blue SSD - 2TB Toshiba 7200rpm HDD

Both of those temperatures are within spec. Remember that the stock 290 and 290X coolers kept the GPU around 95C, and that most Intel CPUs are rated to run at close to that temperature, too. 59 and 75 are nothing to be worried about, unless one or the other's cooler is getting too loud for your tastes.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Pretty much

Also, try playing with power tune on the 390. On the 290x cards some people could cut power by 20% and more without losing performance. Which should help with heat, and save you a very small amount of currency.
Although a cut of 10% or so is more realistic.

Adding on to what NoOneButMe said adjusting Powertune should allow the fan speed to be less aggressive, might help out the VRM temps too.
It would take you 2,363 continuous hours or 98 days,11 hours, and 35 minutes of gameplay to complete your Steam library.
In this time you could travel to Venus one time.

My target is to stay under 70C on CPU, and I feel that's still well on the safe side. Skylake 6600k/6700k seem to hit 4.5 ghz with relative ease, then quickly starts hit a wall around 4.7-4.8. YMMV and all.
