OverDrive Replaced by AMD WattMan App

The AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card is getting ready to launch and just like all video card launches a handful of sits are leaking out information about the new features to get a boost in traffic. The latest leak is from Overclock3D and they have leaked the slides pertaining to AMD’s upcoming WattMan app that will be replacing AMD OverDrive. WattMan is short for Watt Manager and gives AMD Radeon video card owners more control of the overclocking with improved control over per state overclocking, voltage and temperature.

VideoCardz had already leaked an image of interface for WattMan last week, but didn’t know what exactly it was called at the time. Since all the slides have leaked a number of people have finally put all the information and figured it out. The slide about shows the clock speeds for the Radeon RX 480 in 8 different clock states!

The information about WattMan almost stayed a secret for the June 29th launch of the Radeon RX 480, but it appears Sapphire is to blame for leaking out information again. Maybe they just give out information to the wrong folks or maybe they are upset with AMD over things unknown to us.

Did you even read what you posted?

Or did you mean something more? Seems pretty self-explanatory to me.

I'm sure AMD has a slider fir automatically adjusting the clock/voltage or the manual adjustment as depicted in the screenshot above. Your not complaining about having precise control over the clocks/voltages are you?

You could probably only OC the high P-States and keep the rest stock.

Dude's never used Win 3.1.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Great concept, looks good implementation. I really don't like the name, even after the explanation (thank you DancinJack). Just does not sound as good. But I expect a few years later when they change the name I'll have the same complaint. :D
@DrSominodog51, for me with Llano that was what I did. Although I really just made sure the top one was stable than set the lower ones to the same spec. And than would switch between a set modified for low power and modified for high performance.

Nope never used much of Windows 3.11, I was over in Apple land at the time. I have owned every version of Windows starting with 95 however.

I am, if that is the only vector in the drivers for overclocking. If it were me, I would have a simpler option akin to the way it's currently done, but going by AMD's driver habits in the past... I would not be surprised if "WattMan" was it. Assuming this hits the release of new drivers once the 480 is available, we won't have to wait long to see

ALSO (and if any hardware journalists are reading this, please consider covering this if you haven't already) I wonder how Polaris is going to determine which of the higher P-states to use, given how fine grained it appears to be. If it simply bumps up to the next P-state if GPU usage is over 100%, how does it know when to back down? I forget SpeedStep basically does this and it works seamlessly with overclocked configurations, so there are good solutions for that. Can the memory clock up/down independently, given how different compute/gaming workloads could be bottlenecked by memory bandwidth but not GPU power?

I thought memory always stayed clocked at the highest performance state unless the demand is low/idle it then runs with the memory clock at the lowest P-state?

I think I would only adjust 2-3 power states to get a nice quiet idle and keep it cool under load.

The ability for finer control is there for people who want it, I'm sure most will only tweak it slightly.

The bottom of that screenshot implies there are at least 7 power states for the memory as well
