What a timely post! Got my 3770k in 2012, and it runs 4.4ghz and reaches a max temp of 80c with a CM612s in push-pull. Tried the razor method but chickened out...tempting tempting! Wondering how much I can squeeze out of it.

Need to get a vice and the TIMs though...

Finally delidded. Avg temp drop of 20c. Bloody worth it!

Hoping my trusty i7 can last at least another 3y or so.

Kinda piggy-backing onto this thread for my own selfish purposes.

I was going to buy a Rockit88 on Monday but their store was down because they were out of (at least some) materials. It re-opened this morning and I just placed my order.

My i5-6600K hits 80C at 4.4GHz under the Prime95 small FFT torture test using my Corsair H60 with dual fans in a push-pull config. I think it has more headroom in it, but the temps have scared me off. $50 for a delid tool, relid tool, and shipping. I have a tube of super glue and a tube of Arctic MX-4. It probably won't get here until next week, but I'll post back after it's done.

80 C is nothing to worry about. Don't back down till you're well into the 90s under sustained load IMO.

Since my fans ramp up and down with temperatures, I'd like to keep them below 100% under load if at all possible.

It's the other components on the board like VRMs with typically crappy or no heatsinks which worry me more than the CPU at temperatures like that.

Well, my delid tools came today. The process is EASY as long as you're not using conductive materials like Liquid Metal Pro or something. I preferred to go the non-conductive route because my hands aren't that steady. And it's a good thing, because I got a tiny bit on the PCB while I was brushing on the Arctic MX-4.

But now it's clamped back together with the tiniest dab of super glue on each corner of the lid.
Waiting is the hardest part.

I let the glue sit for about an hour, and now the CPU is back in the system. Fired it up and so far so good. After about 15 minutes at idle, the temperature was 25C. The small FFT test is basically a power virus, and I can make the temperature move depending on where I want the fan to hit 100%. Previously it would settle around 82-83C if I left it alone. Now I can bring the small FFT test temperature down as low as 70C if I crank the fans to 100% when the CPU reaches 60C.

The temps in the blend test never creep past 62 when in the past they'd spike to around 77C. So I'm looking at a 12-15C difference before and after delidding. Obviously and quickly a very worthwhile experiment. I'll hang onto it for if I choose to upgrade to Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake one day.

The kit is super-easy to use. Just pop the CPU in with the correct orientation, clamp on the top, and crank the Allen wrench until it pops. Minor heart attack the first time because it was much louder a "pop" than I expected. Cleaning it was the hardest part - that foam adhesive takes a while to scrape away.

A small update on my delidding adventure:

It turns out that my Hyper 212 Evo had a small indent in the base (my fault I'm afraid!), so I finally got around to buying a new cooler and decided on a push-pull Arctic Freezer i33 Plus, which is only about €3 more. I had my eyes on a Scythie Mugen 4 PCGH (push-pull w/800 RPM fans) for a good while, but figured that the i33 Plus would be just as good and a little cheaper.

Since I had to unmount the motherboard to switch the back plate mounting bracket anyway, I figured that I'd pop the lid on the CPU again (it was secured with two small drops of superglue) and see how things looked. I cleaned off the CPU package, die and the heatspreader and checked that the CPU looked fine (it did).

Then I reapplied the Coollaboratory Liquid Metal Ultra on the CPU die and put a couple of drops of superglue at opposite corners on the CPU package and put the heatspreader back on, tightened the CPU mounting clamp and mounted the i33 Plus with four thin stripes of MX-4 (one stripe for the length of each heatpipe in contact with the heatspreader) per the excellent instructions provided by Arctic.

Cost: €42.50 including VAT. The results? Excellent as far as I'm concerned. And the fans turn off when the PWM signal is at <40% duty cycle, making the cooler completely silent at idle and low loads.

Intel BurnTest results:

Stock @ 3.9GHz: 53° C (fans not full speed)
OC [email protected]: 73° C (a drop of 7° C compared to the Hyper 212 Evo)

In other words, I'd gladly recommend the Arctic Freezer i33 Plus to a friend. ;)

I *may* be able to drop the voltage *slightly* from the current 1.3v, but the CPU seems to be more stable at lower voltage during stress testing than when doing normal tasks (which seems somewhat counterintuitive).

Heh. Congratulations! Always nice to see someone benefitting from getting their hands dirty as it were. ;)
