Afterburner - Underclocking too low in desktop

Sat Nov 18, 2017 12:14 am

Anyone have an issue with afterburner under-clocking their card while just browsing or a desktop interface? It drops my MSI 7850 Twin Frozr II down to 300/150 core/memory. This is causing the second monitor (via DVI) to flicker and have scanning/refresh issues, makes it fairly unusable. Oddly enough while looking at the interface I watched it bump up to 400/1200 for no apparent reason, probably a call by some plugin on TR when I loaded. In that 20 second window the glitching went away. This is likely a memory refresh problem from what I can see.

Is there any way to set the floor in Afterburner to say..... 500/350 or something to alleviate this refresh problem?

I set the automatic profile for 2D to a 560/600 which was the minimum and still no dice. It's locking itself at 300/150. Really need Afterburner to be able to play games really well with this card the way that I do, so writing afterburner off isn't a good option at this point. I suppose I could force shut it down and start it when I need, yuck.

For now the only work around was to return the clock to it's stock/default clocks via Afterburner on a profile. I wonder if the GPU can't run at that 560/600 specifically so it goes into sort of a system boot low clock mode? It's been a long time since I dabbled in GPU Core/Memory clocking in detail... Do GPU and Memory clocks require maintaining a relationship or ratio similar to the old FSB overclocking days of CPUs?

300/150 are the standard idle clocks for 7850's, Afterburner isn't changing that.

To add a little more detail, this page has the clock profiles for the HD 7850. https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7850_HD_7870/29.html

It should go to 300/1200 with a multi monitor setup but my experience with AMD cards though is that if the two monitors have the same timings (same resolution and refresh rate) then it will hit the lower (150mhz) memory clocks.

Great info... When I returned it to the stock clocks with Afterburner, it does in fact change the clocks to 300/1200. It seems odd that it would bump it up to 1200 mem from 150. What a large jump from a single monitor mode. This appears to be a bug in Afterburner with how it recognizes profiles for 2D when running multiple monitors then. I could see it not wanting to go up to 1200 if the profile I had set was sub 1200, so it brings it lower but the clocks in my profile were actually 1400+ for memory. Very odd bug unless I'm missing some intentional mechanism here.
