Oldie but goody - Sandy Bridge OC

Fri May 10, 2019 1:23 pm

I finally sorted out why my machine wouldn't over clock worth beans after my PS failed about a year a go.

At the same time it failed and i put in a new powersupply I also updated the bios on my Gigabyte z68 mainboard.
The new firmware looks nice but it also hid the LLC option.
Out of sight and out of mind I totally forgot that I had to turn it on.

Instead I'm using the dvid option at +0.095 giving a max voltage of around 1.35.
HW monitor reports it closer to 1.41

Temps are around 50c to 70C depending on load and it is dead stable at 4.2ghz all core.
Dual core clocks to 4.5ghz just fine as well.
I have it set to conservative overclock and power saving features still turned on so speed ramps from 1600 to 4500 and drops back to 4.2 under full load.

I previously had it up to 4.8ghz with llc at level 5 but i don't have a lot of time to mess with it.
Memory is running at 1600 on xmp profile rather the previous 1333 default.

The overclock is a nice boost in performance while playing games compared to the standard clocks it had been running at all year.
If I get time I'll see if I can get my all core overclock back.
I might try 48, 46, 45, 45 turbo boost multipliers tonight to see if it works out.

I was also experiencing a weird slow down and lagging after about 10-15 minutes of game play in skyrim, fallout 4, and far cry 5. Turns out it was fraps. I shut it down and the problem went away. I was only using it for framecounting so I'm using the built in counter in steam overlay instead. All this time I thought it was caused by a bad driver and I'd have to reinstall windows.

Pretty awesome to learn new things about old systems. Sometimes it can seem a little frustrating that one didn't figure these things out earlier, but late is better than never, even with overclocking.
Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

I just got it up to 4.4ghz all core and 4.6 2 core overclock.

in the bios it would give me 4.6 ghz but in windows it would stick at 4.2.

Turns out there is a file in c:\windows\system32 you have to rename to take the limits off of overclocking:
https://www.reddit.com/r/overclocking/c ... overclock/
https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads ... e.2470372/

Machine is stable at this speed. Gave me an hour of intel burn etc. and 2 hours of playing far cry 5 at these settings.
Max cpu temp is 68c.
Max cpu voltage is 1.416 as reported by hwmonitor

I also forgot to turn off the onboard GPU, which is now done and saves a bit of cpu heat output.

I'm going to go one more step to 4.5 ghz all core and then start droping the voltage a bit and see if it remains stable.

You call it Sandy Bridge OC.

I call it Sandy Bridge OG.
4770K @ 4.7 GHz; 32GB DDR3-2133; Officially RX-560... that's right AMD you shills!; 512GB 840 Pro (2x); Fractal Define XL-R2; NZXT Kraken-X60

i7-2600K @ 4.7GHz, 1080p on GTX 1080, 95 percentile framerate = 78% of i7-9700K:

Pure CPU workloads are better, but still CPU stagnation is here.

I was always happy with my i7-2600k running at 4.2@ stock voltage. IT lasted for 6,5 years before I got a new computer, which was may last yar. So.... actually, it came up to 7 years. It surived through 3 graphics card, memory upgrade and a SSD and secondary drive upgrade. Little trouble with games until like 2 years back or so.

Wow didn't realize Win10 had that sort of shenanigans going on. Doesn't seem to affect newer processors but it's almost as if they prefer users of Sandy Bridge stay on Win7.

Actually, what they'd really prefer is for you upgrade to a newer CPU. That's to be expected. Supporting older architectures means design tradeoffs. They need to either:

A) Avoid using newer instruction set extensions (holding back performance on newer processors);
-or-
B) Provide multiple code paths to optimize performance for newer processors, while still retaining backward compatibility (bloats and complicates the code and makes testing/validation more difficult);
-or-
C) Drop support for older architectures.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I guess I was really lucky with my 2600K. I clicked some kind of 'auto-overclock' button in the BIOS, and it set the CPU to a max of 4.47Ghz.

Well... I got it to 4.6 2core and 4.5 all core on the 2600k.
Dvid is set to .080.

it is not entirely stable seems fine in a lot of games but does not pass occt or prime.

I'm gonna leave it alone.

If I can get another year out of it I'll be happy and so will the wife since I'm not begging for an upgrade :D
