Too much is just as bad as too little.
Stick a bean size blob in the middle press down and give it a jiggle left right and then finish mounting in the order recommend by the manufacturer.
You want an initial light snug on all post first then tighten down. if you have four post they should be done in a cross pattern just like lugs when changing a tire.

Since it wouldn't hurt to try reseating again, take a note with the thermal paste pattern right after you remove the heatsink to see if you really had a good spread. For newbies it may take some practice to get it right.
