best p4 o/c chipset?

Sat Aug 03, 2002 5:33 pm

What chipset would be the best for the P4 and good for overclocking? I was going to go for the i845G or Sis 648 when it is out. Which would be the best to o/c my P4 1.8A to 533 FSB?

Well, I have a 845G running at 533 right now with a P4 1.6A. It's nice and smooth.

I have heard good things about the Intel 850E. Several people have ran the PC800 memory stable at PC1066 and have gotten the P4's into the 3GHZ range. I have been using an ASUS P4T533-C, but have not overclocked it It's my computer at work but it has plenty of options for overclocking.

SiS 645dx is excellent!

I am not an Intel fanboi by any extent (I have exclusively used Athlons for nearly the past two years), but my recent foray into 850e boards left my a bit sour.

So, I decided to go with an alternative, namely the Soyo P4S-645dx, and it is wonderful. The BIOS tweaking options are all there (and then some), and the stability in general is above reproach. That and the fact that you can asynchronously run the FSB and memory, and you've got a serious winner in the OC arena.

In fact, in most benchmarks I've seen, when a 645dx is using good memory and and it's running at DDR400 (200mhz), it is within 1 - 2% of an 850e with PC1066 RDRAM. And for quite a bit cheaper.
