Newbie overclocker, Athlon XP1500, tips?

Wed Jan 01, 2003 7:20 pm

Hey, I built my own comp etc, but I'm a bit of a newbie :D when it comes to overclocking. I'm wondering if it is possible to overclock my Xp1500, (without taking it apart to mod it) and if so, how?

Thanks

Just play with your FSB settings and see what you can get. I've got a XP1500 here at 1467mhz, running like a champ.

There is literally TONS of information about overclocking on the net, so I won't go into any details here.

Is it possible to actually break anything by overclocking it too much? Sorry for being such a newbie :D

I suppose "technically" it is possible. You can damage your CPU by overclocking, but in most cases (999/1000), you would notice your machine becoming unstable, unreliable, crashing, BSOD... ect... before you would damage anything. Most likely if this did occur, it would be temp related. Good cooling, good case airflow, and you should be fine. Remember, small steps, dont go for the highest FSB setting, or multiplier right off the bat.

I haven't gotten into the OC scene yet, but I plan to so I have read about a dozen guides so far. The one that explained it the best, and gave me the whole picture with the potential risks involved is at this link:

http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?d ... de&dId=376

I highly recommend that you read the whole thing. I have read it twice and I'm still learning from it. It could save you a lot of grief, because, apparently, when you OC, there are a lot of ways to screw up, including burning up your mb or cpu, and making the pc unbootable, to mention just two.

Not true. Even if you don't unlock it, you can still overclock using the FSB.

Whatever you do, research before you o/c.

Also, make sure that your heatsink can handle the increased heat from the OC, and also make sure that your psu can handle the increased voltage.
