P8Z68-V w/ 2600K (2011 Back to School Sweeter Spot)

Fri Sep 16, 2011 8:16 pm

Hi everyone!

I put together a kind of mutant monster sweeter spot using some parts from 2008 summer (case, power supply, hard drives) and some parts from 2011 back to school (cpu, mobo, ram, ssd).

What I ended up with was the first system that ever gave me the urge to overclock! >:P

So I've done a few things by following this guide:
http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overcloc ... nners.html

Since I trust this community so much, I figured I'd check in here and see what you all think of my current progress.

I've got the RAM running at 1600 (9-9-9-24-2N-1.50v) which was what it defaulted to when I set the AI Overclock Tuner to X.M.P.

The CPU is running at 100 x 40 per the first set up instructions in the above mentioned link.
Load-line calibration is AUTO.
CPU manual voltage is set to 1.12v. Again, I'm just blindly trusting the guide.

I'm running a stress test now, and after 45 minutes, the CPU according to the ASUS Monitor is around 70C. The RealTemp program shows some higher numbers... Minimums from 73-77 and maximums from 79-83. Prime95 Self-Test shows all tests passed.

So I guess my big question is... am I doing it right? ^_^;
Are the temps about normal for a stock cooler and factory thermal paste?
What's a comfortable goal to shoot for with this set up?
Any other tips?

While that isn't a dangerous voltage, don't blindly trust guides like that.

Otherwise, it's looking good. Have fun with it.

I've always been sort of old-fashioned with unlocked muliplier cpu's.

I bump up the multiplier as high as I can without Prime95 failing. Once it fails, I drop it down 1 level (usually .5).
I now start to bump up my mhz (used to be fsb) by 5. Re-run Prime95 each time. Once it starts to fail, I drop it down 1mhz at a time until stable.
Then I bump the core voltage up by the minimum amount. Then I back the fsb back down, and try another .5 mulitiplier. Then repeat. I also load some sort of temp monitoring program (speedfan or something). I don't try to push the core voltage higher than the second highest I can find on my method of cooling.

temperature is too high. why isnt anyone satisfied with stock? a large amount of people here think that overclocking the cpu will get you more framerates, dont blindly trust anyone or anything imo

I don't do it for framerates in games. Its awfully useful when trans/encoding video, though.

Well... it's kind of a warm room. CPU is at 37C idle.

But if it's too warm, how can I make it better?

You could do what I've already suggested.....

Or do it this way: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/265056-29-2600k-2500k-overclocking-guide
His max temps were ~45C.

Much as I dislike most of Tom's stuff (mostly my latent issues from 10 years ago when Tom was actually there), this is a pretty good explanation.

Also, 100 mhz is way too low.

He had a much more efficient cooling setup than I do. I'm just using what came with the processor. With that being the case, I wonder if my temps are too high and how to lower them.

What would you suggest instead of 100mhz? Go easy on me, I'm new to all this. :) I just read so many articles about how "easy" it is to overclock the 2600k, even with the stock cooler, so I'm just testing the waters.

Considering that a lot of people will end up with this exact setup from The Sweeter Spot, it'd be cool if there were a few recommended settings for the bios from TR.

Upgrade your cpu cooling.there are plenty of options out there from great air coolers to sealed 120mm water systems.I am running a asetek LCS with 120mm push pull w/HQ quiet fans"Its pretty much like a corsair h50 setup but a bit better".I am running my [email protected] with 1.325 volts. My idle and load temps with room at 70 degrees F are 30-61c on 50% fan speed,@100percent fan idle and load temps are 28-56c.I know it will run faster but there is no need @ this time,to be honest 4.5ghz isnt needed YET! but i figured i would burn it in.
As for thermal compound. The new diamond stuff is the best in my book.I was really surprised to find out diamond conducts heat 5 times better then copper.
Well diamond is the future of electronics, once they can figure out how to manufacture chips out of it.It will be amazing, runs 4 times as fast and @400degrees but doesnt need a heatsink.BTW thats just a example.

Would you believe I'm still rocking this 2600K 8 years later? It's happily running overclocked at 4.5ghz with a coolermaster heat sink.Thing's a beast! I feel like I can still get years out of it! Thanks as always to Tech Report and this community for leading me in the right direction!

Anyway, I recently bought a NVMe M.2 Solid State drive, but it didn't fit! I'm not that familiar with the different types of PCIe. Could someone give me an example of a 1TB SSD that would work with my motherboard's PCIe slots?

Thanks!

Congrats, you're definitely getting good mileage from the setup. If you're aiming for NVMe support you'll need to get a later series chipset which I think most vendors began support for NVMe after 2014 in the Z87 or Z97 series with Intel. I don't recall when AMD began support for NVMe. In a typical home PC usage I do not see much difference between NVMe (PCIe) performance vs standard SATA-3.
If you do not already have an SSD and do have an available open SATA port on the motherboard I'd just recommend getting a good 1TB in the 2.5" form factor. Latest prices are close to $100 for some good ones like the Crucial MX500: https://pcpartpicker.com/products/inter ... =price&f=3

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately my SATA slots are all used up... and I even disconnected my optical drive to make room! So, yeah, I'm -1 on SATA slots right now. That's why when I found out PCIe SSDs were a thing, it sounded good to me. I just found out that there are m2 adapters that I could use to get the SSD I already bought to work, so I'm researching that now, but if there's an SSD that would work with my PCIe slots without an adapter, that'd be better, so let me know if that kind of drive is a thing! Thanks!

Something like the $24 Silverstone SST-ECM21 or this cheap and cheerful $7 model would probably do the trick. Whether or not your motherboard will be able to boot off of the NVMe drive might depend on whether or not the UEFI firmware (aka "BIOS") has been updated in the past eight years.
