looking for a new drive

Sun Mar 13, 2016 5:11 pm

I got a new lappy and am thinking of upgrading the drive . This is what dell included and what I am using now
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... scrooge-js

I tryed using a samsung M.2 evo but this dell didnt seem to like it
so I am taking suggestions as to what drive to get , note it must be gumstick style as the shorter versions of the M.2 drives woulld have no way to use a screw also must be sata 3 not pcie based
Looking at some drives I came up with a couple

http://www.amazon.com/Mushkin-MKNSSDAV5 ... B011JARP98
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 2F83426194
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820167335

I am kinda leaning toware the intel drive as they have a good reputation . but isn't the 535 old tech ? looking for feedback here .
The mushkin drives look like a good deal and not real sure how well crucial stacks up

The Intel 535 is likely using a SandForce SF2281 chances are your safe from any past bugs/stablitiy issues since Intel is using a custom firmware. The one Intel 525 I'm using has the Sandforce controller, haven't had any problems with the drive. The Crucial should be problem free as well, and Intel/Micron are partners on the flash memory chips why both reported as using 16nm MLC NAND as a result of the partnership on fabrication process.
It would take you 2,363 continuous hours or 98 days,11 hours, and 35 minutes of gameplay to complete your Steam library.
In this time you could travel to Venus one time.

This should work in your laptop? The interface is listed as "SATA III"
SAMSUNG 850 EVO M.2 500GB SATA III 3-D Vertical

This from PCPartPicker: Storage SSD everyone likes the Samsung or the Crucial.

oh a 535 user COOL ! 8)
so does the specs hold up to what intel claims am most interested in write times as this curent drive has only 300 mps write

You know, you would think Crucial/Micron would be solid (and their RAM totally is), but their SSD firmware has let me down several times before (I have several Sandisk drives (2 extreme pro's and an ultra II) and like them, but I don't think they have much in the M.2 segment). Take that for what you will.

I'm also not too concerned about older tech (i.e. the 535) - if it's reliable and you can get a good price on it (and the 535's are getting affordable these days), then go for it. Unless it sucks power, or is really lacking in some department (not sure about that one).

I read your first post, wasn't sure which Samsung EVO was the problem. :)

Some M.2 drives are SATA+AHCI while some are PCIe.
Some PCIe drives are AHCI while some are NVMe.
Which type does your laptop like?
· R7-5800X, Liquid Freezer II 280, RoG Strix X570-E, 64GiB PC4-28800, Suprim Liquid RTX4090, 2TB SX8200Pro +4TB S860 +NAS, Define 7 Compact, Super Flower SF-1000F14TP, S3220DGF +32UD99, FC900R OE, DeathAdder2

Well, FWIW the issue I had a few months back that I *thought* was dodgy firmware on a Crucial BX100 turned out to be a marginal SATA cable instead... so worst case, maybe they're not the greatest at dealing with marginal cabling. Other than that, I have had no issues with them.
