Crucial M500 240gb

Fri Nov 11, 2016 2:32 pm

my OS is installed on my M.2 950 pro, i threw in my old crucial M500 240gb, everything's enabled the drive doesn't show up in bios but shows in device manager as unknown device, drivers updated (didn't need to be) but the drive won't show up.

i've tried sata slot 6 then 5 same result, the others are blocked by the 1070

ideas ?

Samsung made the 850 EVO, not Crucial

It almost sounds like the drive needs to be initialized, have you used it before?? If not then under Disk Management you can initialize the disk which will then allow you to format and use it normally.

If you HAVE used the SSD before and it has data on it then I'd suggest you download Samsung's Magician software and see what it says about the drive status/condition.

Couldn't hurt to do a secure erase on it. That way you know you're starting from a "factory fresh" state, with all blocks zeroed and TRIMmed. Then format just like you would a new drive.

Edit:

That's not good. Sounds like the drive may be toast.

Have you tried connecting it to another system to see if it is recognized properly?

downloaded storage executive from crucial and it's saying drive0 - good health, available capacity 0.00, still doesn't show up in explorer so i'll change the sata cable and see what happens.

just read this in the manual

"the sataexpress connector can support one sata express device or two sata devices"

does this mean i can only use the m.2 as main and no more sata, or no m.2 and two sata ?

You might want to try other ports. Some of the ports are disabled depending on what type of M.2 drive you have. The 950 Pro is NVMe, right? I would think (but can't guarantee) that all the SATA ports would still be fine.

did a complete cable swap and retested all ports just running the igpu

looks to be a dud.

should it still be getting a lil warm if it's toast ?

not really sure on that. It might still be drawing power, so depending on what's wrong I guess it's possible.
