i want to get a dvd-rom drive to burn cd's faster. i have a 52x lite-on cd-rw.
it seems like the fastest dvd-rom drives are 48x cd and 16x dvd... so there aren't any 52x CD read DVD-ROM drives?

Your trying to compare apples and oranges Me thinks! CD speed and DVD speed are two different things. What you need to look at, If I understand your question correctly, is just the CD read speed of the DVD drive. Find the one with the fastest CD read speed. I assume you are trying to copy on the fly. I think currently the fastest DVD drive CD read speed is 48X.

There are only 16x dvd rom drives, which translates to 48x cd-rom speed. which is decent for burning cd's.

i had to burn at 8x, and i had only one drive, before this, and it was realllllly slow.

Up until Friday I was using a 16x DVD to do copys to a 24x CDRW with copy times usually under 12 min. Which as you said above is 48x cd speed copying to a 24x burn speed. I never had any problems with this even though both drives were on the same controller. "Smart Burn" worked well on the cdrw. Currently I believe 16x DVD's are as fast as you can get today, unless someone has come out with a new one I haven't heard about yet.

yeah, it'll burn at 48x when it's copying, and 52x when it's burning from the hard drive. i'll have to go get a dvd drive soon then.

Actually it makes perfect sense. These are multipliers. They multiply something. A 52x CD-ROM drive is 52 times faster than the original CD-ROM speed (i.e. the speed an audio CD spins). A 16x DVD is 16 times faster than the native speed of a video DVD. These are measuring different things. DVDs are naturally faster than CDs because they are newer technology (have denser data, etc.) So, a 16x DVD is fast enough, because of the nature of DVDs, that it beats 52x CDs.

This is also why they list DVD speed and CD speed separately. The fact that a DVD drive is 16x tells you absolutely nothing about the speed it can write CDs. They are completely unrelated (except for the fact that if they go to the trouble putting high-speed DVD circuitry in place, they will probably do the same for the CD circuitry). A 1000x DVD drive might still only burn CDs at 24x if that's the limit of the CD technology they built into it.
