Ouch, 4TB SSDs are still very expensive.

Sat Apr 22, 2017 2:30 pm

I'd love to see them come down to under $1,000. I have just about filled up a 1TB HDD in my laptop.

External USB3 hard-drives are cheap for stuff that won't fit on your laptop's internal 1 TB SSD.
4 TB SSDs are more expensive because the cheapest SSD lines top out at 2 TB.
Crucial MX300 (up to 2 TB): $268/TB
Mushkin Reactor TC (up to 2 TB): $275/TB
Samsung 850 Evo (up to 4 TB): $374/TB

Speaking of the Mushkin Reactor TC, it seems that this drive can't be found anywhere and it is as rare as hen's teeth.

It's a laptop with a lot of sample-based virtual instrument libraries. Currently, I am using a 2TB SSD in position 0, 1 TB SSD in position 1, and 1TB HDD in the DVD bay.

I would like to get a 4 TB SSD to consolidate everything to the drive in SATA position 0, then move my 2TB drive into position 1 for continued expansion. I could then remove the HDD from DVD position and put the DVD drive back in there.

This is a 2011 laptop, but can justify doing this until either I replace the machine or it dies. At replacement time, I could just move the SSD drives into the replacement laptop.

Thanks. A 2 TB drive would be the next choice, and making it external is an option, but not a good one for me, because I already have two external drives (one for downloads and another for backups) for this laptop and I hate it.

External drives reduce the mobility of a laptop, because they require bits and bobs like cables, AC adapters, etcetera. Some of them also come with screws and other junk that must be kept track of.

For me, it's easier to just ensure that I have ample capacity in the internal drives. The only exception for me would be to still keep one external drive for backups (actually, it's a set of drives that I rotate; but only one of them needs to travel with me at any given time).

My Toshiba external 2½" hard-drive is slim and requires only the short USB cable to power it. I usually keep it in one of the pockets of my camera pack. I do agree that it's not as convenient as having a large SSD, but I occasionally need more space than my single internal SSD for photos and videos.

I only need one drive. $549 is not bad. Not planning on any travel for a few months, so I can hold out to see if prices fall on the 4TB drives or if my laptop dies, which would be just my luck... At least for the moment, it's running great and not giving any hints of impending failure.

Is your 2011 laptop UEFI? I recall the large desktop motherboard manufacturers first came out with UEFI in 2011 (back then it didn't even include GOP) and the laptop manufacturers may have taken rather longer.

UEFI mode and GPT are required to boot from >2.2TB.

We are currently in a NAND shortage-prices are expected to rise during the year-
leveling off beginning of next year, and hopefully lowering after that..........................

Okay, thanks. Maybe I will need to just be happy with another 2TB drive then.

Do you really need all of that on your laptop itself? I know for a lot of things I only need occasional access, so I tend to either put it on a cloud or have it at home and accessible via a VPN.

That said, my job gives me infinite cloud space, so I have a lot of potential room there.

No, the virtual instrument libraries need to be on locally-attached storage, or else they take too long to load into a project.
