CrystalDiskInfo just started showing a yellow caution warning a couple of days ago so I thought I'd better get the data off it before it craters. Good thing I did. It's been my experience that once that yellow caution flag shows up and it's because of reallocated sectors, it's not long after that the drive dies altogether.

It has 100,322 hours on it. I got my money's worth.

If you want, you could try to revive the drive with HDD regenerator. It fixes soft bad sectors, sectors where the magnetic field has gotten weak over time. This same page was telling me to replace my HDD ASAP. Now it says everything is good. Granted, everything may not be totally good. But at least, I was able to make a successful sector by sector copy with Macrium Reflect to an SSD. Mind you, Macrium Reflect is VERY picky when it comes to reading bad sectors and will refuse to finish the cloning job more than any other disk image software I have ever used.

Yeah, once the drive is bad enough that you've got 1208 unreadable sectors, odds are it will continue to develop more. Don't trust the "repaired" drive for anything you care about.

10k hours on a Samsung HD204UI hard-drive and 5½k hours on a Samsung 830 SSD. These are in a family member's PC that doesn't stay on 24/7, so they've accumulated 6½k and 5k startups.

Another family member uses their PC more heavily. 12½k hours on a Seagate ST4000DM000 hard-drive and 9½k hours on a Crucial MX100 SSD.


I've got a stack of old WD6400AAKS drives here. I should plug 'em in and read their SMART data, too. I'm sure they haven't accumulated more than two hours in the past three years, but they saw some use before that.
P.S.: 10½k hours and one CRC error on the one that I checked.

SSD hours are probably meaningless.

But how about starting an SSD thread with TBW stats, or better, TBW + unpowered hours after which it was all checksummed okay.

60 overwrites isn't that many, honestly, for an early MLC drive. 10,000 would be somewhat typical for wearout.

I'm pretty sure I have an X-25E laying around somewhere with a nearly a PB of writes...

I'm hopelessly bad at maths. So 30.43*1024=31160.32/512=60.86 full drive writes. How did you arrive at 6000 overwrites? Going by that, there should be (60.86/4)*96=1460.64 full drive writes left. Please correct me as I'm likely wrong.
