Have you looked at the detailed SMART attributes to see which one it thinks is at EOL? If this drive has the head unload timer issue I'd guess it is the load/unload cycles one.

It's not just load/unload cycle count, the drive is actually failing (I consider it already failed except it's not completely dead). It's gotten all sorts of read/write errors, reallocated sectors, bad sectors, etc. Had three more in identical condition but I've picked out the shiny platters and magnets already and otherwise disposed of the drives.

Load/Unload Cycles: 115,121
Reallocated Sectors Count: 1,264
Reallocation Event Count: 655
Pending Sector Count: 48
Off-Line Uncorrectable Sector Count: 39
Write Error Rate: 146,206

HD Sentinel gave this in its report:
Failure Predicted - Attribute: 1 Raw Read Error Rate, Errors occurred while reading raw data from a disk. Indicate problem with the disk surface or the read/write heads.
Failure Predicted - Attribute: 5 Reallocated Sectors Count, Count of sectors moved to the spare area. Indicate problem with the disk surface or the read/write heads.
There are 1264 bad sectors on the disk surface. The contents of these sectors were moved to the spare area.
The drive found 39 bad sectors during its self test.
Based on the number of remapping operations, the health of the disk was decreased in different steps.
There are 48 weak sectors found on the disk surface. They may be remapped any time in the later use of the disk.
More information: https://www.hdsentinel.com/hard_disk_ca ... ectors.php
Replace hard disk immediately.

Yeah, once you get more than a few dozen or so reallocated sectors things tend to go downhill fast. Probably an indication that there's been a head crash and debris is floating around inside the drive, causing the problem to snowball.

Part of my day job is explaining to people (repeatedly) that they should not expect drives with 10,000+ reallocated sectors to be functional. "I keep trying to reformat it, but it still doesn't work!"

Agreed, that is probably the case here.

I'm still going to go and blame WD's overly aggressive head-parking firmware on these Green drives. Mechanical wear from excessive parking was likely an exacerbating factor that led to whatever happened.

WD 1 TB Green WD10EADS with 40,371 hours. Hasn't been powered up since I copied everything off 2 years ago to build the new computer. It was the download target for torrents for quite a while.

It was joined over time by Greens in 1.5, 2 and 3 TB flavors, though they were primarily bulk hot storage, not getting abused as a download target.

Once a month isn't going to be killing anything within its useful service life (it's also not the entire drive).

I've had Western Digital 1TB blacks in my 24/7 workstation since 2009, working in RAID-1, and they seem to be built like tanks. Both have over 80.000 power-on hours at this point.

I have two ancient ones:
The WD is fine (75119), the Seagate had some bad sectors reallocated so I no longer use it for anything critical (65182).
I am getting ready to add in the other WD I have from the same batch, yes it has been sitting on a shelf for 9 years.
The seagate was recovered doing a complete wipe at one point after it developed bad sectors.
It hasn't had any other issues since but I still don't trust it.

Power-on hours is intended to indicate a remaining lifetime prediction for hard drives and solid state drives, generally, "the total expected life-time of a hard disk is 5 years" or 43,800 hours of constant use. Once a drive has surpassed the 43,800 hour mark, it may no longer be classed as in "perfect condition".

This 320GB Seagate just won't die. Now it's up to 68111 hours / 7.77 years, and not a single reallocated sector.

Oldest one I have in service at work is at 43205 -- a HGST Deskstar HDN724040ALE640.

Ironically this morning one of them started barfing up correctable read errors. Luckily it's running a zfs volume so it can fight the checksumming for a week (RAIDZ2 so it's got some spare copies to work with) until the replacement arrives.

The last generation of longitudinal magnetic recording hard drives were built like tanks. Longitudinal-based HDD in general where more durable and tolerant to physical stresses then the current crop of PMR units. That’s party why HDD life expectency and warranties took a dip when PMR was starting to be used en mass.

Given the data dumps from BackBlaze, I don't know if your assertion here is backed by real data.

I've certainly not seen a decline in HDD reliability except for very particular models that were plagued from the start.

Krogoth needs to get perpendicular.

I wonder how much the distinction matters anyway. I could be wrong, but it seems like there would have to be a great number of unfortunate tricks employed to make a drive with the kind capacity that's common today without PMR.

I have a Dell PE 2800 running server 2003 with 73gb scsi drives in current operation.

I have no idea how to check the power on hours but since it has been on 24/7 since 2004(?) I'm pretty sure the hours on at least one of the drives is pretty high.

15yearsx365daysx24hours is ~131,000 hours...

I did check in OMSA and shows the driver serial number etc. etc. but not powered on hours. On a positive note none of my drives are in pending failure...

17523 hours on the WD Black in my current desktop

So far, none of the drives logged any errors. (I did RMA the WD Blue and HyperX Fury when they were brand-new, though, due to unusually early failure.)

The 660p in comparison is the youngest drive, at 967 hours as of this writing.

The WD Blue is 5462 hours, and the Fury is around the same ballpark as the Black.

All of the drives were already there when I moved to Z390.

I don't think hours say much for SSDs.

I just replaced a 250 gig Hitachi Deskstar that I'd been using for years for non-critical online data storage. CrystalDiskInfo just started showing a yellow caution warning a couple of days ago so I thought I'd better get the data off it before it craters. Good thing I did. It took a few tries to get all the data copied because the drive kept disappearing from the BIOS. It's been my experience that once that yellow caution flag shows up and it's because of reallocated sectors, it's not long after that the drive dies altogether.

It has 100,322 hours on it. I got my money's worth. :-)
