So following the latest article about the new SanDisk SSD I was disappointed. I used their Ultra II's and they were excellent. This new breed seems to cost more and offer less performance. So what other current drives could be comparable to the Ultra II's? (Crucial, Mushkin???)

I stopped trusting sandisk when my 500GB PD got autolocked and the poor customer support never even bothered replacing it. Enough said.

I don't like Sandisk storages, I had experience issue for two times that I had to replace them with new ones.

I generally like SanDisk and have had good experiences with them, that being said 3D NAND is new enough that I'd personally let someone else do the early-adopter thing.

Worth noting that TLC was similarly marketed as both cheaper and better than MLC when it was new, but it took many years for it to actually become truly competitive.

Kind of funny where I live WD/Sandisc is trying to charge more for their 3D than Samsung 850EVO.(good luck with that)

In the mid-range Samsung 850EVO is the yardstick others try to match.So that's a good starting point.
Crucial's new BX300 seems a good option,depending on price.(avoid the BX200 that was a bit of a lemon)
Intel's new 545S might also be worth a look as well.

With everyone now moving to 3D the "race to the bottom" might be coming to a end,just avoid planar TLC and any ram-less drives.
The two exceptions to that are Sandisk ultra 2 and Samsung 750EVO.

Samsung is still on my "avoid" list. The 840 EVO fiasco really pissed me off (I own 4 of them).

JBI, was that a design failure that affected all drives, or was it hit-and-miss? I have two 250GB 840 EVO and as best I can tell they work fine, even on PCs that have been off for ~3 months.

They're OK if you have the latest firmware loaded. It took them months to release the firmware fix. Releasing something as badly broken as the 840 EVO was, then taking your time releasing a workaround is inexcusable.

jbi, Obviously we can't speak to the future, but during the product lifetime of the 960 series, nary a consumer will ever see (or has seen) a firmware update in Samsung Magician. And that's good - it means it has been rock solid basically since opening day.
