added a hard drive

Thu Oct 05, 2017 2:25 pm

decided to take out the HD from the seagate expansion 3 TB i wasn't using and install in my PC

HD in question is the seagate barracuda st3000dm001 (old model) 2012-2013?

i can only get 2 TB out leaving 746.52 GB unallocated

was getting 3 TB in expansion form

is that some mandatory hidden seagate crap ?

free 2 TB anyway i look at it.

Sounds like you reformatted it with an old-style MBR partition table. You need to use GUID partition table (GPT) if you want to use more than 2TB.

NTFS/REFS sits on top of whatever type of partition you create. It works on both MBR and GPT partitioned disks. MBR/GPT refers to the partition table itself, not the file systems you create in the partitions. They're independent.

NTFS supports partitions up to 256TB.

Did you try to first delete the existing partitions?
You can also GPTize from diskmgmt.msc: right-click on the physical disk ("Disk 0, Basic...").

Your best bet is to re-partition the disk from scratch.

IIRC, this is the particular 3TB model which is known to die in less than 2 years (I had one too in the past). You're lucky to have it still working even now, but I really suggest you backup any important files to another different drive.

Presumably (being an external originally) it wasn't spun up 24x7. If it is indeed the problematic model, that could be why it is still alive and kicking.
