A-Data SU900 512GB or Samsung 860 Evo 500GB Sata III

Thu Dec 06, 2018 2:44 am

First of all, I wish everyone a good day. I stayed between two SSDs: A-Data SU900 512GB and Samsung 860 Evo 500GB SATA III. A-Data MLC, Samsung TLC (3-bit MLC said Samsung). What are your comments?

Do you need to choose between one of them?

Both are good brands, and can pretty much max out the SATA III bus. Enthusiasts prefer MLC (i.e. 2 bits/cell) over TLC (3 bits/cell, as used in the Samsung), so if the A-Data SU900 is actually 2-bits/cell MLC, then it might be the preferable one, in terms of wear longevity. Not that TLC is noticeably worse, but if the prices are roughly in the same ballpark, I'd prefer MLC over TLC.

Thank you very much!
I want to choose between one of them.

The SU900 is indeed 2-bit MLC according to TR's own review. Rated endurance is 400TBW versus 300TBW for the Samsung. Not quite as good as I would expect for MLC, but it's still a 33% improvement. Both have 5-year warranties, so it'd probably come down to price for me. What's your use case?

Both drives are pretty close in overall performance.

The only real differences are these:

  • The Samsung is better at burst data typical of a client workload like an OS and games drive; It has faster peak speeds and higher IOPS (reacts quicker).
  • The ADATA will be better for a production drive - saving/copying large project files, video editing etc. It will not slow down like the Samsung will when it is worked really hard.

Personally I'm not keen on Samsung, they're a pretty shady company and they've screwed millions of customers over in the past, so given how similar these drives are in performance and price, I would choose the ADATA simply because Samsung SSD have a few black marks on their record that I can't ignore.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.
