PNY CS900 SSD series: 240/250, 480/500, 960/1TB

Tue Oct 01, 2019 2:45 pm

The CS900 series includes two variants for almost every size:

240 and 250GB
480 and 500GB
960GB and 1TB

Is it different controller/flash combos sold under the same series, or something else?

Given the lack of differentiation on the spec sheet, one would hope it's just slightly different provisioning to hit price points.

Currently:
$30/32 240/250
$50/53 480/500
$89/95 960/1000

Ever seen any other models with a similar scheme?

In the past I've only seen it on controller/flash refreshes. It's definitely odd to see them sold side-by-side.

The larger counterparts were added recently. That spec PDF is from 3 months ago. PNY's site didn't list them half a year ago.

Either they've changed components, or perhaps better binned flash for an extra 1-3 dollar, like you said.
Makes me wonder why no real midway models: 200-400-800 GB.

Ahh, OK.

Yeah, better binned flash and/or improved controller/firmware (reducing the need for overprovisioning) is a possibility. Another potential scenario is that nothing was actually improved and all they did was decrease the overprovisioning to trade off endurance for capacity.

Since that spec sheet doesn't quote any endurance numbers it is impossible to say which it might be.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Gee, also Crucial is doing these shenanigans with the BX500.
960GB and 1TB. Both, supposedly, SM2259XT and same Micron flash. Only apparent difference: 240TBW and 360TBW.

I think the 960GB is being phased out. The 1TB has been available for a few weeks now.

Is it possible 960GB and 1TB have the same amount of flash, just more reserved space in 960GB?

Anything's possible, but the lower TBW suggests there's more to it.
Maybe flash quality has improved between the 960GB and the 1TB? Or maybe they've just become more certain of its reliability.
