M.2 2280: SATA SSD in NVMe port?

Thu Oct 03, 2019 10:34 am

Hi!
I'm looking to get a Dell Inspiron 3671 desktop and upgrade the HDD. The computer has an M.2 interface but it is specified as "PCIe/NVMe AHCI". Will the Crucial MX500 M.2 SSD, which is a SATA device, work in this port?

just brew it!

AHCI is a SATA controller standard, so yeah looks like it should work.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

It should, but you should buy a NVMe drive and get the 3-4x better performance (for about the same price).

...unless he already has the SATA one from a previous build. And 3-4x improvement in synthetic benchmarks isn't going to translate to 3-4x better performance in most real-world workloads.

Did you get this to work in the inspiron 3671? I installed a 970 EVO m.2 drive and can't get my 1tb hard drive to recognize now.

Curious if you tried, and had the same outcome?
