Is WDIDLE non-destructive?

Sat Oct 26, 2019 12:54 pm

Before I change the head park timeout on a WD drive loaded with data, a 2019 Blue WD40EZRZ-75GXCB0, I thought I'd ask.

It would be illogical for it to be destructive, and reports on the web say it's not harmful to existing data, but any contraindications?

Completely harmless, though I'm shocked that we still have to slow down the head park cycle on WD drives.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I think it's less frequent than in older drives, but 8-10 seconds is still too quick for my taste.

Curious that they've removed the program from their site.

It is completely harmless and reversible.

If you are having trouble finding it on WD's site, IIRC some of the 3rd party "rescue" images include it (e.g. UBCD).

Or fire up any Debian-based Linux live distro and install the idle3-tools package (it is not the original WD tool, but rather a Linux CLI tool that provides equivalent functionality).
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
