6 years, 7 months of power on

Wed May 27, 2020 8:29 pm

I am either the luckiest or most unlucky person on the planet.

I have one drive in my NAS that has 6 years 7 months of power on time. I have 3 other drives that are exceeding 5 years of power on time.

None of them have errors. I have 3 spare drives waiting for a failure - and can survive a double failure.

Those drives probably pre-date the "race to the bottom" on quality. Enjoy while you can, newer drives are probably going to be worse in terms of reliability.

Luckily I have 3 'spare' NiB 3tb hard drives sitting in the closet. A seagate, a toshiba, and a WD. I just hope the bearings haven't flattened. (I do try to turn them once a month or so). All are over 3 years old.

The bearings in HD's are actually quite fragile. If you let them sit in one position for years, they will develop a flat spot due to gravity. Best practices are to (literally) rotate the dry storage drives every 6 months or so.

Does that apply to both the older ball bearing designs and the current fluid dynamic bearings?

I've never heard of cold storage orientation affecting drive bearings. Source?
