HDD Questions

Sun Feb 15, 2004 3:04 am

Ok, my system has 2 HDD's on the primary bus, and my optical drive is now all alone on the secondary bus.
I have this 40 sittin around, and i coud really use the space as i have about 8.5 GB's left total of the dives, now i know i could just add this drive to the secondary bus as slave, but i was told/under the impression that if you put a HDD on the same line as an optical drive, that it would slow my system down and possibly cause burning errors and/or dvd playback.
Now i have a Promise 66 IDE card, could I just put this in my box and add the HDD? I have a feeling it wouldnt work, and im too werry to try it and possibly fry my system, i could realy do without a 45lb paper weight.
Thankx in advance.

if you add the hard drive to your secondary cable, add it as the master and set the cd drive to slave. this solution will atually be much faster than ur primary ide cable with 2 hard drives on it, as they both can saturate the 133mb/s avalible, where as the cd drive and hard drive are unlikely to do that. if i was in your position i would add the promise card and put one hard drive and the cd drive on separate channels (assuming it has 2 or more), then your two fastest hard drives on your motherboards ide ports. this way they all have there own channel, and should give you better performance than 2 hard drives on one ide channel. the only performance which may suffer slightly is the hard drive on the promise card, as it only has 66mb/s, but you are not then sacrificing the speed of your other drives.

I too would put each device on it's own channel.

The fear of buffer underrun errors dimished greatly with the advent of Burn Proof technology, which was licensed out and appears under a myriad of marketing names. General rule of thumb, if you have a 12x or higher burner, you probably have it, and don't have to worry so much about what you pair it with in your system. Again, generally.

Set everything to Master (jumper-wise).

The Promise controller has it's own BIOS. No need to set anything in your mobo BIOS to let it do its job.

Depending on the drives manufacturer, he may need to set it to "single"...

Yep. WD drives would want no jumper at all for 'single'.
