S.M.A.R.T. readings.........

Wed Jan 25, 2006 10:59 am

I've had 2 programs tell me that my hdd is running at 52c and that my other hdd is running at 30c. Both programs indicate which hdd is which and when I put my hand on different parts of both hdd's the one that is reading 52c is cooler than the one that is reading 30c on all areas. Anyone have any ideas about what is going on?

Are S.M.A.R.T. readings known to be occasionally false?

52C is fairly hot... what does that drive feel like? Is it warm to the touch, or hot? If it's only warm, I'd say that reading is the one that's off. If it is hot, then the other one is probably the inaccurate one.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

My raptor occasionally gets up to 48C before I notice it, and then I turn the fan on, and it'll drop down into the low 30's usually. (hurrat for vantec vortex )

Its actually feels rather cool to the touch I have to leave my hand on the drive for a few seconds to notice any warmth. The pcb is slightly warmer than the rest of the drive, but it's fairly cool as well. After running Norton AV scan for 15 min or so it gets a little warmer, but not anything close too what I would consider hot. I've also got a 120mm putting out 56cfm blowing over it.

I've got some Samsung drives that routinely report temperatures that could boil water yet only feel warm to the touch. So I wouldn't put too much stock in the temps that SMART reports.
