Hitachi Deskstars not available in Canada?

Thu May 31, 2012 12:16 pm

Comrade Gerbils

My new camera has huge RAW files and I've been eyeing a Deskstar 3tb to store them on. I was slack in grabbing one off the NCIX site, waiting for this weeks sale. Sadly, all of a sudden few of the Deskstars are even listed anymore. Checking tigerdirect and newegg the same thing is true. No Deskstar 3tb in Canada. Has anyone seen any for sale in the wild?

Seeing 2 in stock in Vancouver region here:

But ya, it's odd how little there are around. http://www.directcanada.com/products/?s ... re=HITACHI shows 'Not available' so maybe it's discontinued?

Chesme, thanks, I forgot memory direct. But I was hoping for the Deskstar 7K3000, not the 5K. Reading RAW files is exactly what you want a 7200RPM drive for NOT a 5400. Thanks anyhow. They don't have the 7k listed at all :(

I know this isn't what you asked for, but have you thought about picking up one or two slower mechanical drives for long-term storage, and a modest SSD (say, 128GB) for upload and temporary post processing? If you upload to the SSD the transfer will really fly, and then you can move batches of sorted images over to long-term storage at a later point in time when the copy process won't interfere with your workflow.

The other advantage to using a low-speed mechanical for archiving is that the reliability gods smile serenely on slower spindle speeds and reduced heat buildup.

Ludi

The system that I am working on, the one in my specs, is basically a supercharged lightroom station. I have one 128gb Vertex 3 that is just a lightroom cache drive. The big HDD is for the actual raw files and they need to be on a fast drive or it slows down the entire workflow. The 3tb 7200rpm Deskstar is kinda the perfect drive. Its too bad I can't find it in stock anywhere. BTW, I will get a 5400 rpm drive to backup the faster drive to, then keep that offsite.
