Sfc issues HELP SSK YOU LOVE HIM

Thu Apr 09, 2015 4:36 pm

anyone an sfc expert? i have some issues with my windows 10 install (i realize it's not out yet, save yourself the trouble in telling me that). The store doesn't work, I can't install new drivers, are my two main issues. otherwise, seems perfect. when i run sfc /scannow it starts but then fails at a random number. 9%, 23%, etc. with the "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation". yes, it's admin.

the only thing i can make out in the CBS file are the following:
2015-04-09 18:31:05, Info CSI 00000e77 [DIRSD OWNER WARNING] Directory [ml:40{20},l:38{19}]"\??\C:\WINDOWS\Boot" is not owned but specifies SDDL in component Microsoft-Windows-BootEnvironment-Core-BootManager, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral

i have no idea what not being or duplicate owned means in this context, but the rest of it is just 10000 pages of total number of unique etc. with not seeming errors. no reason is given for the failure that i can figure out besides that. However, it's not listed at the end of the scan... THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT FILES THAT HAVE OWNERSHIP "ISSUES", many of them seem to be language files though.
anyway, just thought i'd check with you bros. I don't really want to format....

Did you do an upgrade install? possibly file ownership issues, boot into Safe mode (if it works) as admin and take ownership of the root of the drive down.

I did do an upgrade. Do you mean take ownership of the root of c? Doesn't that make trusted installer super annoyed?

Rule #1 - NEVER do an upgrade to a beta OS.

Rule #1a - NEVER upgrade a Windows OS :D

I'm also running windows 10 but I did a complete wipe and reload and it works really well.
I would highly recommend the same for you.

On the other hand upgrading from 9926 to 1004X worked just fine, And upgrading from win8 to win8.1 also worked just so I guess it's not a hard rule... :D

Good point actually, what OS did you upgrade from, 7 or 8.1?

Could use takeown on the Windows install folder?

best bet is probably to nuke though as said above

8.1
I haven't used 7 since the 8.0 preview launched.
this was an 8.1 fresh install which i upgraded to the first 10 TP, then upgraded to current. I think it'll likely be formatting. Annoying, but c'est la vie. I might not bother for a while. There's nothing i need in the windows store right now, and I don't have any new devices to install. My vpn is stuck to PPTP though, since I can't install the TAP device for openvpn, but ol well.

Unfortunately modern versions of Windows lack a tool to reset the entire ACL structure back to default. There is a legacy unsupported way, but on a modern OS like Vista or newer it will make the situation even worse. There are various tools that can create backups of the ACL structure (i.e. icacls), but they have to be used in advance of the problem occurring.

You could fix this situation by tracking down all the listed problem directories out of the CBS logs and then fixing their permissions to match a reference image (fresh install in a VM for example). You have other problems with the OS it reads like. I'd argue at this point instead of trying to take a scalpel to the underlying problems and repair them, it'd just be easier to start from a new undamaged state.

Download latest image from MS, make ISO dvd or bootable USB, reboot and format.

Done and done.

No need to thank me ;)

Or if you want Deanjo's 2 cents, install Linux or OSX and life will be gold after that!!

Yo SSK. I have a busted 10041 system as well after upgrading from 9926 on a multi-boot test system.

Perhaps try DISM instead of the craptastic SFC?

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

I'm not familiar with DISM. Is it something I should try to figure out, or will I just waste my time and likely accomplish nothing? I'm happy to try it, i just literally know nothing about it.

DISM can be helpful I had some errors that kept coming up in my Win8.1 logs that I couldn't get rid of in any other way and I was able to get rid of some of them using DISM. It's not a perfect solution but it can fix issues that SFC won't touch.

I'm anti piracy. I don't condone piracy of windows either. In a utopian world, everything would be free as in speech but I also respect the rights of the software authors who should be able to determine the stipulations on how their software is used. If you don't like the terms, then don't use it, you have the freedom to seek alternatives.

It can't hurt to run it. It won't make things worse. That command attempts to fix the Windows Update store. Your logs does mention BITS as one of the ACL problem children. It'll only take a few minutes.

Even if it fixes the SFC issues, sort of doubt it'll fix the OpenVPN issues you have.

Yeah, the driver problem is annoying. I can't install anything new. it appears in the list, waits like 5 minutes, then puts it in the "unknown device" section. Stupid computer.

DISM says no corruption, but sfc finished and fixed files after I ran it! going to try installing tap, but we'll see how it goes. store is working now!

I was just thinking the other day that Windows really needs to make it more visible to people (like, as visible as Windows Update) to do disk-wide image backups. Where people have SSDs, it would be very manageable for people for at least a little while. It might do some good in that time. There's no dialogue everybody knows to just bring up, press a button, and it's like the equivalent of a dd backup on Linux is what I mean. Everything. All partitions, boot magic, GPT, everything. Basically the System Restore of metadata.
