Windows 10 Move Folder Targets off SSD

Sat Jan 02, 2016 12:20 am

OK. I'm so stumped and frustrated I'm about to just reinstall Windows 10 to fix this. I just set up a clean install of Windows 10 on a system with a 120GB SSD and a 3TB hdd. Of course I needed to move the My Documents/My Pictures/My Videos/Downloads folder targets to the hdd. What I did was:
Right clicked the My Documents shortcut - Properties - Location - Move. And I selected D: (which is the hdd). What happened is that windows made the ENTIRE HDD into the My Documents folder (there isn't even a "My Documents" folder on the hdd).
I cannot revert the folder location to default because I get an "Access Denied" error.
I looked up this issue which suggested logging onto One Drive and re-locating it to another location. So. I did this and relocated One Drive (which was set to D: for some reason) back to C:/Users/One Drive. This did nothing. STILL getting the Access Denied error.

Please help!!!

PS. It seems the correct way to do this is to create a "My Documents" folder on the D: first to set the target to D:/My Documents?
I don't THINK I'm that stupid. This really shouldn't be so difficult.

Ouch, should've pointed it at a specific folder! Does it still deny access in safe mode?

Ok, I tried one more time this morning and had the same issues. Since I wasn't very busy this morning and this is basically a fresh build, I just reinstalled windows. Made sure to save all the downloaded program installs to a flash drive first which helped speed up the process not having to pull them from the net. The "re-do" took me less than a half hour (since I [luckily] hadn't done a whole lot of software installs and setting changes; this is going to be an HTPC). This time I made sure to create the corresponding folders on the hdd BEFORE moving the targets. Everything went smoothly.

I actually didn't try safe mode, but literally nothing I could find online (which mostly referred to the One Drive directory) fixed the "access denied" issue.

If you're getting "access denied" errors as Administrator, you probably need to start impersonating the Local System account.
Download the Sysinternals suite from technet and run "psexec -i -s cmd.exe" to give you a command line running as Local System. Perform whatever tasks are needed within that command line, or replace cmd.exe with whatever application/configuration utility you need.
