Can't stop win10 upgrade

Mon Apr 18, 2016 3:24 pm

So I opened up my laptop this morning and I see this waiting for me.

There is no option to stop the installation, just to put it off. I have since switched my automatic update options to to let me choose when to install, but I think it's too late. What can I do to stop the install from happening?

Hitting the "x" won't do anything. It's in the system tray as part of the windows update program.

It would take you 2,363 continuous hours or 98 days,11 hours, and 35 minutes of gameplay to complete your Steam library.
In this time you could travel to Venus one time.

Forget what you know - Microsoft is your god, they know what's best for you. Don't try to overrule your leader or they'll steamroll over you anyway to impose their awesomeness on you.

OK, on a serious note - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351 (See the bit about group policy if you have Win7 pro, or the registry edit if you have home.)

If that fails (regedit worked on a Win7 home machine, and policy failed on one of my win7 pro machines for some reason), uninstall KB3035583, then run updates and make sure to block it. Keep in mind that they've been known to reissue this one every now and then, which defeats the block somewhat (although I've never personally seen it become unblocked, with updates on manual). You may want to run Disk Cleanup, in case they're already downloaded the 6GB or so to the $Windows~BT folder.

Group policy is also kinda cool for disabling consumer experience (aka making apps/driver installs less annoying/more like 8 and earlier) or updates, should you eventually move to 10. I finally opted to upgrade some of my machines to 10, but only because I can use those policies to tame it.

Okay, I found KB3035583, but when I right click on it the only options are view details and copy details. It says it installed successfully but there is nothing about uninstalling it. I do have the Window Bt folder as well. Im running windows 8.1.

Can I just delete the Windows Bt folder and be done with it or will it just download it again?

Go to control panel, remove programs, remove installed updates - you should be able to remove KB3035583 from there. It *IS* possible.

I wouldn't go deleting system folders - use Disk Cleanup to deal with it. That won't deal with the nags anyway.

It will actually not upgrade now or tonight, therefore it does exactly what you want.

Being shown in the system tray doesn't mean it's going to install.

Windows 10 is the Borg. You will be assimilated into the collective consciousness. Windows 10 of 1511 has spoken.
I'm clueless about computers.

They need to be able to say "Fastest Growing OS" in media headlines. THEY WILL GET THE NUMBERS THEY WANT.

This is why I've disabled automatic updates on all of my machines and the ones at work. They're just getting worse and worse.

Tweak Guides has been helpful for knowing when Microsoft is pushing Windows 10 upgrade related patches.
For example:
Windows Updates
8 April 2016

Microsoft has released non-critical updates for Windows 7 and 8.1. They are listed in more detail in this Microsoft Article. Note: These are all Windows 10 upgrade-related patches being re-released yet again.
