Win 10 Anniversary Update - Start Menu :(

Thu Sep 22, 2016 1:27 am

OK.

Someone tell me what keyboard shortcut you guys use now to shutdown your PC?

I just got delivered the 1607 build anniversary update yesterday (and OMG don't get me started on how I could not tell why my entire internet bandwidth was being used... grrrrrrr hidden background download updates bs).

Previously I pressed Windows Key and then pressed UP + enter + Up + enter. Yah shutdown!

Now the focus of my keyboard is put in the **** "All apps" garbage waste of space list, rather than in the partially hidden unless you use your MOUSE menu on the left with all the useful stuff!

Anyone know how to make it so the focus of your keyboard is on the left menu and not in all apps?

Thanks.

1. Focus the desktop, press ALT+F4, cycle through the list of options to Shutdown (it will remember your last action).
2. Setup the Windows Power options to shutdown your PC when the power button is pressed. Press the power button.

Can I focus the desktop without using a mouse?

Edit: Ah Windows Key + D gives desktop focus awesome!

That's pretty close to what I want, just can't seem o grab focus with the keyboard :( (Alt + Tab cycling doesn't show the desktop).

So now quick shutdown is Win + D, then Alt + F4, + Enter.

Thankyou!

Yah I use Win X normally for all the other options, was more a rage at the Start Menu being even less useful than it was. :/

Win + X, u, u (or, u, r for restart). Almost as good as the old days with Win, u, u shutting down a machine in a fraction of a second.

I've come to terms with the idea that Microsoft isn't going to get the Start Menu right in the foreseeable future. Classic Shell (or one of the other alternatives) really is the way to go until and unless that expectation is upended.

Now that you guys mention it, if the Start Menu was actually just Win + X menu instead it'd be ENTIRELY more useful that's how **** it is right now. A **** text menu is leaps and bounds more functional.

Actually for people who really shutdown this often, I'm sure some have already created shortcuts and bind keys to "shutdown -s -t 0 -f". 8)

I had thought so also, but I found a utility (KeyTweak) that will let you remap keys to other keys, so my otherwise-unused right ALT has been remapped to the Windows key.

I used the Unicomp Model M clones (with Windows key) for a number of years. Then when the wave of Cherry-based mechanicals hit the market I picked up a couple of Rosewills and haven't looked back. If I need to replace one of them for some reason I'll probably treat myself to one of the CODE keyboards from WASD, but these Rosewills are the original (better QA) RK-9000s; aside from needing to repair a fried controller in one of them a few years back (due to a massive ESD zap), they show no signs of quitting.

Yup. I found it quite amusing as well.

Edit: I suppose my moment of extreme keyboard nerdiness would be the time I fried the controller in my RK-9000 (massive ESD zap), and subsequently did a DIY repair. Found a guy (in Europe) who was selling custom replacement controllers for about 1/3 the cost of a new keyboard. The replacement controller even has user-modifiable firmware, though I have not attempted to customize it. Placing a magnet over the controller area (it is located under the LED indicators) closes a reed switch which puts the controller in developer mode, allowing new firmware to be downloaded to it over the USB port.

I miss the Win key a lot. However, this is not enough of a reason to give up my 1994 Key Tronic. Membrane but great anyway.
When did PS/2 become standard? Mine had a DIN connector originally.

Yes, Keytronic used to make some decent rubber dome keyboards. In spite of being rubber dome, the keys had some "snap" to them (stiffer rubber, maybe?), so they had more tactile feel to them than a typical rubber dome, in spite of not being mechanical.

I used to have a Keytronic that I really liked. Eventually it died, and I ordered a new one direct (since by then they were difficult to find at the usual online retailers). Sadly, their quality had declined, and it wasn't *that* much better than cheap generics any more (in spite of still costing several times as much). That was the point at which I picked up a Unicomp... and then when the Cherry switch craze hit I picked up a pair of RK-9000s and have been a happy MX blue user ever since.

I don't think I could do without the Win key, even though I don't run Windows. It makes a fantastic global hotkey modifier in Linux, since native Linux applications traditionally did not use it (though this seems to be changing somewhat). I even got some custom "Tux" keycaps to replace the Windows logo ones.

I know IBM started using PS/2 as early as the 386.  Somehow we acquired a used IBM 386DX-20 in the early-mid 90's (just as I was starting to learn about computers) and it had a PS/2 keyboard port.  What was more memorable though, was when I popped it open and found weird slots I had never seen before.  Not being able to use any of our cards (modem, sound, 1MB Cirrus SVGA) meant that it was pretty much useless as far as I was concerned.  I think we got rid of it fairly quickly.

As for everything else, I remember DIN keyboard connectors being used all through the Socket 7 era.  PS/2 became mainstream with the Pentium II, which was when Intel somehow got the ATX standard widely (and quickly) implemented.  Prior to that, there was no standard rear I/O panel.

All of my PC-compatible machines have had PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, going back to a Tandy Sensation manufactured in late '92.

Not really.
If MS was truly open to feedback we would have the functionality of Classic shell (being able to choose what start menu we want) integrated into Windows.
Same would go for the Aero look.

I think maybe you're a bit confused there SSK.

The whining nerds are the technophiles who embrace new changes and even if they don't like the changes (as in the case of Microsoft's recent attempts at Start Menus) they're usually the ones capable of working around the things they dislike.

I've been on Windows 10 fast ring with multiple machines since the technical preview and when I moan about windows 10 issues, I'm moaning on behalf of well over a thousand staff who my team and I directly support: I've already worked around the problems, but to the vast majority of your average users the problems are real, they're common, and very few people like what Microsoft have done with Windows 10.

Next time you're having a rant about people who moan about windows 10, remember that Microsoft practically forced it upon most users with aggressive, lawsuit-inducing nag screens and shady automated installation buttons disguised as commonly-dismissed notification popups that had button-switcheroo tactics going on! The masses are deeply dissatisfied with the end result and that's ignoring the privacy issues or the malicious behaviour of major updates effectively reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows and deleting all their customisations.

I think I speak for the majority of most tech-competent people when I say that Windows 10 is great, but it gives far too much control to Microsoft, so although W10 is embraced by most PC enthusiasts, it's Microsoft's new behaviour that is the problem; People think they can adjust and modify Windows 10 as they have done with previous versions of Windows for decades, only to find all their hard work with interface customisation and third party software deleted/reset/broken on a regular basis through no fault of their own.
