Creators Update - No Dolby Digital & DTS Anymore?

Wed Apr 12, 2017 6:16 pm

So, despite my best efforts to not have my main system update to the Creators Update (The "Defer feature updates" box is enabled), outside of my systems active hours it's installed it anyway. I could rant about that in itself all day, but perhaps for another topic.

I was wondering if anyone here since updating to it has lost the ability to use Dolby Digital and/or DTS over Optical, because mine has just stopped working despite previously working beforehand. I have my SteelSeries H Wireless headphones as the receiver, and they only support Dolby Digital. The Realtek driver on my motherboard was one that Gigabyte also licenced the Dolby Digital Live (DDL) features. Games that used 5.1 would be re-encoded to DDL on the fly and sounded great. Blu-Ray's played back in Cyberlink PowerDVD would pass-thru the pre-encoded Dolby 5.1 track.

Now however, while DDL says it is enabled in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, you only get stereo channels play back. When you open up Windows audio control panel and play a test tone, a message pops up saying "This format is not supported". When I play a Blu-ray, it's just total silence if I want to use multi-channel.

I'll take suggestions on how I get it to work again... ;-)

Seems obvious, but did you try removing and reinstalling your audio drivers and any other audio related software you use?

Thanks for the reply, but yes - reinstalling the soundcard drivers was the first thing I did. I also reinstalled PowerDVD 16 but no luck.

Does anyone here with Creative or Asus soundcards still have multi-channel sound? I'll chalk it up to rubbish/dated drivers if that's the case, but I suspect Microsoft has removed something instead...

It is possible that Microsoft "stealthy" removed it because they didn't want to pay the licensing fees for it. They kinda did this with Media Player under post Window-7 era which no longer have built-in "DVD playback" unless you pay for the license via the Windows Store. Assuming that they did the same for DD/DTS support you might have to pay for it via a separate app on the Windows Store.

Not a licensing issue. Windows doesn't have to have a license to pass-through (not decode) a DD/DTS bitstream. It's up to the encoding hardware, in this case his mobo with the Realtek chip to have the proper drivers and licensing.

First thing I'd suggest would be to actually completely remove the drivers for your sound chip and let Windows itself try to handle it, perhaps via Windows Update. See what happens then.

Thanks Morphine, I gave it a shot and still nothing. I started a further search on the internet and come across this page at Microsoft's support site. Perhaps Krogroth is right about something stealthily being removed, because on pages 3 and 4 of that topic my other question is answered: It's broken on Creative X-FI and Asus Xonar sound cards too.

Worse still, bitstream pass-thru only seems to work with HDMI from what people are posting. If I didn't know any better I'd say they may be trying to depreciate the Optical connector... ;-)

It is the part of the whole next-generation of DRM being cram down customer's throats.

Every major update seems to cause issues with DDL, as far as I can remember. It's probably got more to do with how the sound card makers do things than the OS itself.

I wouldn't be surprised if it got fixed pretty quickly because win10 overall is in a much better state than it was.

Kinda glad I jumped on the HDMI audio train a long time ago. That said, it'd be silly to deprecate a connector they still use on their own kit (Xbox One.) So I'm guessing that's not what's going on here.

Posted this just now, apologies for it being after the horse has bolted. Sadly only works on Pro and above, though: not sure if Microsoft wants all capable people to pay out for Pro or to treat all without Pro as peasants, either way it's annoying.

Revert?

(Open the Settings app, click on "Update & security", click on "Recovery" on the left panel, and under "Go back to the previous version of Windows 10" click "Get started" and follow the process.)

Edit: a Senior Software Engineer on the Windows Audio team posted in the Microsoft Community thread on this (can't seem to link to the post itself):
Thanks to all those who filed problem reports on the Creators Update/Windows 10 1730/15063! We think we know the root cause and we're working on a fix.

to the OP:

Download the Media Feature Pack for Windows 10. Make sure you grab the one specifically for Creators update. link

This should fix the issue.

Thanks, Tanker, that link is a huge help.

Now all I need to do is figure out how to get my Sound Card working again. (Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1, cost me rather a lot back in the day)

EDIT: Sorry to answer my own question, just found this: https://danielkawakami.blogspot.com/2017/01/updated-windows-10-drivers-for-asus.html

Move to an affordable USB studio interface and never look back again. Unless you need 5.1/7.1 analog output from it, in which case... bite the bullet.

Trying using the Xonar Uni drivers since that audio card uses the same codec (C-Medic 8788) as some of the Xonar cards.

Thanks for all the input guys, but I'm almost at the point where I will just buy a new sound card. I roll back the updates a few days ago to restore the broken surround sound features and it was fine again. Overnight Windows updated itself again to the Creators update automatically. I checked yet again ensuring that I had placed a tick in the dammed box that days "Defer feature updates" but that apparently does nothing.

A friend who has an Asus Xonar DX updated and I have seen the DDL and DTS still work on it, despite the drivers being last released under Windows 8. The problem may be just with Realtek and older Creative X-FI cards then...?

Yeah I have a Xonar. In indeed after the Creators update DD & DTS were broken.

My steps to fix it were:

-Install the Media Feature Pack

-Re-install the Uni Drivers.

I don't know why the Media Feature pack is a separate download. And I also do not know why it fixes a lot of sound related issues. My guess is that it reverts some dlls but not all. I also know the Media Feature pack fixes a lot of game related issues.

It exists because Microsoft was required to produce a version of Windows without Windows Media Player and related technologies (and fined a then-record nearly €500M), by the European Commission, for breaching unfair competition rules. The fine was in March 2004 and the first "Edition N" was announced a year later.

Timescales for this stuff are long, this all started in 2000 and the large fines were openly discussed by 2001.

I'd guess your guess is correct.

While the feature pack install didn't work for me (It only plays back Stereo over Optical still), I've since ditched the Realtek solution in favour of a SoundBlaster Z.

Everything works perfectly for the optical, and sounds a whole lot better too - Especially when hooked up to my analogue speakers when I don't want to use headphones. Never thought I would say that about a Creative product after painful memories of the X-FI I used to own back in 2007.

So, the TLDR is that it only appears broken with Realtek's implementation of Dolby/DTS.

Hmm. I've been pondering those for a long time but I'm invested in HDMI (even more so now with Atmos.)

It's too bad noone wants to make a new multichannel audio only connector. (Though I guess it looks like USB Audio 2.0 might work for that, I don't know much about that yet.)

FWIW, I have an SBZ in my Windows toy, doing 5.1 DDL over optical, and it never broke when I installed 1703.
