Good. Microsoft is free to encourage people to get off old operating systems however they want, but leaving people with security vulnerabilities on an OS that's otherwise still supported because they have too *new* of hardware seems classless. Arbitrarily blocking updates seems very, very icky.

While I personally am not one to worry about things like this, it does seem somewhat ironic that people will trust a random person on the internet enough to download a file from them that modifies a core component their OS, to allow it to have security updates... hmm. Along with that, many are doing it avoid using an OS that they don't trust. I have a feeling that the percentage of users that can 100% verify without a doubt that this user made patch is safe is incredibly small, the rest are simply putting their trust in a small group of people they don't know to avoid putting their trust in a larger group of people they don't know.

That said, this was inevitable and if for some reason I was in the situation of having to use Windows 7 (for compatibility reasons) on a brand new CPU I'd certainly do it if the general consensus was that it was safe. Disabling security updates for Windows 7 due to hardware differences is absurd and Microsoft should know better, even with all the mistakes they make.
