The soft block will turn into a hard block soon enough, then this user patch will be useless.

Yeah, here in the modern world MS takes a dim view of usermods to core DLLs. This one will be toasted no later than the next Patch Tuesday.

IIRC, they've only committed to not delivering security patches. I never saw any claim they wouldn't be patched at all.

I don't see MS applying the patch to systems, it'd have to reactivate the update service or enable a method people could use to work around the lockout. But I do see them quietly patching it in the installation media.

On the other hand since the entire purpose of this misadventure was to supposedly stop OEMs selling Win 7 and 8 on new machines, then MS may not even bother to patch it out. I can see it going either way.

The wording strongly indicates otherwise. And as I've not seen sites correcting this assumption by now I would tend to think it is true.
