Windows 10 Fall Update Build 1709

Wed Oct 18, 2017 10:58 am

I took the Fall Update Build 1709 yesterday and I have to say being able to actually see the individual update status again is very very helpful instead of thinking the updates are frozen. No issues so far either which is always a plus!

I need to talk to my IT to allow it. I can't even install the spring update!
It "installs" and reboots but then doesn't actually update. The first screen after reboot is for selecting the keyboard language and then the next is a generic multi-boot option window which the only real option is "exit the installer". Boo!

I had this happen to me.

It turns out that you can install the update(s) but you need to do it as a local admin. And when the PC restarts after the install you need to sign in for the first time as a local admin.

Hmm. Don't know if I'll be able to do that. Thanks for the info though.

I did a manual check for updates on my main rig yesterday for S&G's, and Fall Creators immediately popped up and started coming down the pipe. I didn't get enough time with it afterward to comment much, but I did notice the granular update progress meters for a couple small updates afterward. That's a nice improvement (albeit very minor).

Installed without a hitch on my desktop. Only thing I had to do was reinstall GPU drivers cause SVP couldn't initialize properly (OpenCL error or something). Did that and problem solved.

Updating my work laptop now. This should probably take a while cause this laptop is annoyingly slow.

You're in an enterprise environment...you shouldn't be trying to install it on your own. There's a reason we don't give people admin access. You don't know what sort of problems you updating will create for any management systems. For example, Configuration Manager requires an update to be able to manage new Windows 10 versions properly. :)

Also, for those who need it, Microsoft released a new version of RSAT for 1709:

Just finished the update on my home PC. It did take a while to download and install but could be due to several users doing the same. I usually open my Task Manager to keep an eye on processes and I noticed some new additions to the Performance tab which includes a GPU monitor now.

Also if you're running Win10 Enterprise that's usually not available right away. Seems like it normally takes a few weeks for an updated build to show up at the volume licensing site.

They were actually on the ball this time. 1709 Enterprise is already on the VLSC. I grabbed it earlier today so I can capture a new image for my SCCM Task Sequences.

The HDR status improvements are nice. Edge actually measuring up for a change is nice (I always liked it after a major update, but the experience always fell apart til now.)

Some of you guys will like the additional update controls. (Even if going through Advanced Options->Delivery Optimization->Advanced Options is kinda funny.)

Mostly, otherwise it just feels nicer...not much major over the Creators Update.

I still wish we can get controls for Store max download speed/bandwidth. I've suggest that to the Feedback Hub so chances are someone's in the Store dev team is actually considering that. They added the ability to rebind/remap controls for non-Elite controller now so someone's actually making good decisions there.

They just will not get me to use Edge. I am a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnngtime Chrome user, even in the early early early days when it was brand new, and the newer Firefox version with Quantum (i'm using the dev edition) is pretty damn good. Edge just can't measure up to those two.

Otherwise, Windows updates for W10 have gone flawlessly for me and they usually have made significant improvements. Definitely happier with W10 than I have ever been with Windows.

I use Firefox primarily and Edge at times. Still happy with both but I am glad to hear so many people happy with Quantum. I'll wait for it to be available on the Release channel but so hyped at this point!

Plus, with Edge getting the extensions I use on Firefox, it's a great alternative when i need to save some power because Firefox still eats up battery like crazy.

Also, the Fall Creators Update just finished on my laptop. That took around 5 hours.. :-?

Is it just me or have laptop hard drives gotten worse instead of better? I mean, to hell with them. The laptop I got a bit ago the transfer rates would get so low I would've sworn the drive was damaged, but as soon as I took it out of the laptop it performed fine.

First casualty: The Fall Update has borked the display driver on my HTPC. Intel HD Graphics 610, Kaby Lake Pentium G4650. Before, it worked fine at 1080p over HDMI. Now it tries to launch some "unsupported mode" as soon as the startup screen is complete. I have no idea what that mode is or how to fix it, because if I connect a DVI display that defaults to primary and the TV works fine at 1080p as a secondary display. Microsoft stupidly removed "startup options" from the possible options when booting from a USB installer key, which would allow a safe mode boot without having to be inside Windows first. Instead, that option has been replaced with "reboot to UEFI setup."

EDIT: I *may* have worked it out by getting the TV display configured correctly as a secondary, switching it to primary in Display Settings, then unplugging the DVI monitor. After that I did a full restart (shutdown /r /t 0) and it came back normally. Hopefully it holds -- although that's some Windows 95-grade hackery, in 2017. Bad Microsoft. No biscuit.

Yeah, but the CPU on my laptop sure didn't help either; Core i3-5005u...

It could always be worse. I have two monitors hooked up to my PC, and Fun Times happen if I leave the secondary DVI-D one connected (no, not only when turned on, just connected). Having my 144Hz monitor only sync at 60Hz (and using the color profile of the secondary monitor as well, just for kicks) means that I've been forced to only use a single monitor at a time.

For me the most important new feature in this build is the ability to get windows update to stop sucking down so much bandwidth!
I wish to see things not as they are but as they should be.

Main machine: Core I7 -2600K @ 4.5Ghz / 16 gig ram / Radeon 7870 / 240 gb Corsair ssd / 5tb hd
Old machine: Core 2 quad Q6600 @ 3ghz / 8 gig ram / Radeon 6870 / 240 gb PNY ssd / 1tb HD

Looks like Microsoft made another kernel level change to the graphics subsystem. WDDM has incremented to version 2.3 now. I'm presuming that means you won't be alone in dealing with some oddball graphics quirks for the next few months as AMD, Intel, Microsoft, and NVIDIA work out the bugs. These WDDM changes have not been a smooth part of these upgrade cycles.

I updated my NVidia drivers immediately after install Fall Creators went in, and noticed that it listed "Not Installed" as the current version for a few of the components, which I thought was very odd.

In light of this and some of the posts above, I'd probably recommend everyone reinstall or update their graphics driver afterwards.

Both my laptop and desktop show signs of this. My r9 fury flickers occasionally and my p51 Quardo m2200 has done a few things that have left me scratching my head. Now I know why.

I’m sort of in the testing group for win10. Everyone else is in win7.

Seems like I'm going to have a "fun" time figuring out why my keyboard and mouse aren't working after clean installing FCU; I guess I probably should reinstall Windows 10 FCU again (since I'm lazy and want to start over again instead of trying to fix it.

The primary suspects atm are Corsair CUE and Asus AI Suite. I hope it's the former, since otherwise I can say goodbye to my fan controls in Windows.

Seems like I've managed to avoid any issues with USB input by not installing CUE this time. Nobody will miss strobe lighting (I can still adjust backlight levels and Windows key usability without it anyway.)

I'm impressed, though, at how the Windows team managed to cut the boot times even more from Creator's Update - eyeballing the initial boot times, it feels like it takes 25% less time to get to the login screen, and the delay between pressing Enter after password entry and the desktop showing up seems almost instantaneous. I have fast startup within Windows disabled, too, as I'm on an SSD that won't need it.

Just need to find a way to either get the download arrows on my Start menu to actually start downloading the apps they're supposed to be (they got stuck for some reason), or for me to manually install them (I could always clean install FCU on my laptop and see what they're supposed to be and then manually reinstall the missing apps). A "check for updates" within the Store app did nothing.

That apparently didn't work, even after running it twice (since the first time I ran into an Internet connectivity issue).

Guess the "slow way" it is, then - referring to my laptop. (I do use some of the apps.)
