W7/W10 sharing folders?

Wed Jan 03, 2018 12:07 pm

It has been a while since I did desktop IT support, but I am getting stymied. I have a headless box running Windows 7 Home and my desktop is running W10. The W7 is my HTPC/Media Server. However, I cannot access the folders. Its the stupidest thing ever, as I used to be able to do this quite easily. Here is how it is configured:

W7 Machine: The D drive is the only thing I care about. In it is my movies. Plex media server runs on the C: under Win7. However, when I try to either share the D: or the folder under it, I cannot enable Write as an option. There just isn't one. I can only grant read only access. What am I missing here? I have both machines set up with Administrator priveliges (for this task), but I cannot enable writing to the drive.

I would also love to be able to Remote into the machine, but that can wait.

This is pretty odd. The only things I can think of offhand are 1) Is the folder already using a different sharing method that needs to be updated or removed (Homegroup sharing interferes with direct sharing sometimes) and 2) Is the current login an administrator?

It could be the version of SMB. WIndows 10 only allows access to SMB v2 and above. Windows 7 should default to SMB 2.1 but it's worth checking:
On your Windows 7 box open powershell with admin permissions (right-click powershell, run as administrator) and then run the following command:
get-smbconnection. The dialect for your share(s) is the version. It should be 2.x or greater. If it starts with a 1 there is more work to be done to get Windows 10 to connect to it,

What is the D: drive? Is it a CD/DVD or is it a file system on a disk?

Might need to make sure it's fully patched then. The SMB version changes and updates might be the cause.

Got it sorted. Patches were good. But, while sharing options were limited, and the system and network security was correct, but the security permissions for the drive were wrong. Got them updated and all is well.

And the solution worked until the next restart..... now it won't work at all. This is frustrating.
