Anyone getting hard resets today?

Fri Jan 05, 2018 9:17 am

Came to work to find my machine reboot overnight due to a Windows update. "Expected, I thought!"

Now, I'm having these hard resets again and again.
No blue screen, no event logs in the Event Viewer. Nothing. Like the power went out.
So far it's been just me and another programmer in the office.

I wonder if Microsoft has messed up something critical in the Kernel with all the panic going on (Meltdown/Spectre).
Mind you, these are Xeon workstations that have been perfectly stable for ages.

Anyone else having these hard resets today out of nowhere?

Just noticed the patch installed overnight was KB4056892, which I believe is the one attempting to mitigate/fix the CPU *hitstorm going on.
So maybe microsoft messed something up in the kernel.
I can't even work. Stays up for maybe 5-10, then reset.
I foresee regular coffee breaks today. haha

I don't even know what to believe anymore...

They said only Intel CPU's were affected.
Then they said Only Intel CPU from "one decade ago" were affected.
Then they said everything was affected from everything that you own to your grandma's toaster oven....
Then they said it was only going to be slowing up your only gaming by 5 to 30 percent
Then they said it was the patch that was doing the slowing up and not the bug....

Apparently it's doing more harm than good.

Just rolled back the update. Lets see how it goes.

It seems the rollback fixed it, but had to make sure Windows wasn't installing it again.

So, has Microsoft only patched Windows 10 release 1709 (on 2018-01-03) ? (Like Apple only patched macOS 10.13, on 2017-12-03, also with partial mitigation only.)

I checked Windows Update just now (8.1 Pro 64/i7-4790K) and have no available updates.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Out of interest, what kinda Anti-Virus are you running? According to MS, some AV software makes unexpected kernel calls that can cause issues with the patch.

Yeah, I saw that on the AV front -- how is it "unexpected" though? How can Microsoft not have profiling information on all the major AV suites and be able to publish a list of which ones it thinks seem okay?

Ryu just posted this over in the Meltdown/Spectre thread: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... true#gid=0

It's a list of which AV vendors do and don't "play nice" with the patch.

According to Microsoft patches for RTM, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709 have been released.

I'd assume some of those are only eligible if they are LTSB versions.

I can personally confirm that my 1703 systems are seeing the patch.

You can find the KB articles/patch numbers here:

My wife's PC got a BSOD overnight and wouldn't boot normally. Startup repair seems to have fixed the issue. I wonder if this was related to the Meltdown patch...

My 1709 Home instance is spinning away, it's a very Noddy box though (Atom and 1 GB / 32 GB) so who know when it'll see the patch.

My 1703 Pro main system has been failing to install the patch all afternoon, have even resorted to clearing out the Windows Update download directory.

The Windows 8.1 Pro HTPC has no patch available.

Edit: these all the same AV. The big machine spins at 15-17% CPU for hours once it gets to "Preparing to install updates 70%", the tiny one might have installed the patch because it now doesn't work properly, and the other one ... is Windows 8?

Edit 2: now I'm in trouble, just confirmed the CPU spinning on another 1703 system, but this one is a HP Stream 11 so we'll be here a while before it eventually fails. The big machine failed to install again in the end, though (as before) TiWorker is still chewwing cycles ...
