Hot Swap - Win 10

Mon Mar 05, 2018 8:25 am

In preparation to move I dug out my little Thermaltake Blacx sata hotswap bay so I can format a bunch of old HDs I had lying around. When I last used it was when I had Win7 and this thing worked flawlessly and as advertised. Now with Win10 I cannot get it to work at all. I dont see any drivers for it.

Does anyone have one and working under WIN10? If so how? Is there some sort of setting that I am missing or overlooking.

I assume you don't have eSATA, so it's just a USB thing. No special drivers.
Maybe it's broken? Does it work okay on another computer?

yes it works

I can tell it works because sometimes it recognizes that there is a drive, and sometimes it lets me open it, but when I try to dig around and see whats there it kinda shutsdown and then the drive is non-responsive.

Working sporadically sounds even more like a hardware problem.
Maybe it's just the cable?

My first thought so I tried three plus eSATA.

Ooof, good luck dude. The product page says "Windows 7 Ready!" which means it was released before Windows 7. I doubt you're gonna find drivers or a real solution here.

Have another power adapter of appropriate voltage you can try?

I assume you've tried more than one HDD, so the combination of both USB and eSATA working sporadically on that Win10 sounds like a bad dock.
But if you said that it works fine on another OS/computer, that's unexpected.

FWIW there are plenty of stories on the internet of this particular dock, and its siblings, not working properly under W10. IMO he shouldn't invest too much into this but rather look for another solution.

That's odd. Why would a standard USB device work unreliably specifically on Win10?

It might not be impossible, but it would be very surprising. It would have to be a very specific mix of USB controller standard compliance issues and changes to the stock drivers in Win10 to trigger it. If it's also with eSATA, that's one perfect storm.

But whether it's bad hardware or a strange compatibility issue, yes, another dock sounds like the solution.

Yeah, if it was affecting just the USB side I'd be inclined to blame USB stupidity (especially if there's an ASMedia USB chip involved). But since it seems to be affecting eSATA as well, it is most likely an issue with the dock itself, or the power brick.

FWIW I own the dual-bay version of that dock. I experienced issues similar to the one the OP is reporting when I connected via one of the above mentioned ASMedia USB interfaces, but it seems OK when connected via eSATA or a non-ASMedia USB port. (Well, aside from the fact that you can't individually hot-swap the two bays, since inserting a drive into one bay apparently resets the drive in the other bay... but that's a separate issue.)

Just make sure that SATA controller through BIOS/UEFI has hot-swapping enabled on the port in question.

The newer USB 3.0 design works great on Windows 7/8/10. The prior one (also USB 3.0) died in an odd way - it would only work sporadically on Windows 7 and refused to work properly on any other OS (RHEL 6, Windows 10, etc).
Victory requires no explanation. Defeat allows none.
