Re: Win10 still capable of activating on Win7 keys, apparently...

Does anyone here actually run an unmodified Windows 10 install with absolutely no hacks\tweaks to minimize the ads or data collection? The advertising shown in the pics in this thread can be turned off easily. With programs like Winaero Tweaker out there (and many online guides explaining how to do the tweaks manually), there's no reason to have to deal with the vast majority of 10's annoyances.

I disable Cortana and remove the ads from my start menu, but that's it (no external tweaks, just right-click, remove). The rest are few and far between to the point where I don't notice them.

I use it straight default win10; not really any tweaks and certainly no 3rd part apps. I find Cortana useful sometimes, and I just ignore it the rest of the time.
This is for both my work laptop and the home desktop.

Speaking of advertising....
Does it seem strange to anyone else that Menards repeatedly plays their commercials while you're in the store? You're already there. By whatever method, they've been successful in getting you inside and shopping. I don't understand what they're trying to accomplish by further playing commercials.

Update: just processed another one, a Dell E5430 this time, nearly identical to the previous but with an Ivy Bridge i3 in the socket. This time I skipped the Win7 installation step and installed Win 10 Pro with the "I don't have a key" option. The completed installation did NOT auto-activate, but when I clicked "change product key" and entered the Win7 key from the laptop's Win7 Pro CoA, it activated normally. So that's another datapoint, anyway.

I just found a still-sealed & shrink-wrapped copy of Windows 8 Pro (retail) that I vaguely remember getting as part of a bundle on NewEgg a few years back. I wonder if I'll be able to use it to activate Windows 10 Pro.

I just did.

After a lot of pain and suffering, after replacing a motherboard and having Win10 Pro deactivate itself, I performed a hail-Mary manuver and "enter new product code" in the Activation help screen and put my Windows 7 key in.

60 seconds later, I had an activated copy of Win10. That was... unexpected. But it worked fine.

Needless to say, NEXT time I upgrade my computer I'll associate my MS account FIRST so that I can use the automated website to fix activation for that PC.

Third and final result from this batch of e-waste rescues, a Dell E6230. Same result as above, no auto-activation but Win10 accepted the Win7 key.

Probably!

BUT, the only way to know for sure is to try it.
