Windows Tips & Tricks

Mon May 21, 2018 8:48 am

I thought having a forum thread with windows tips and tricks would be fun. This can be anything from simple keyboard shortcuts to registry modifications.

Win + Left/Right Arrow - snaps the current window to half screen.
Ctrl + W - Closes the current window

Regedit\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse (Windows 7) - Change mouse hover time (in ms). I always reduce this from it's default 400ms so that window previews on the taskbar pop up faster. Must log off or restart for changes to apply.

Did we not already have one of these? If so, I guess a mod can merge...

Win + Shift + Left/Right Arrow - moves the current window to the next monitor
Win + Down Arrow - minimized the current window
Win + L Key - Locks the computer (very useful if you're in an enterprise that requires you to lock when leaving your desk)
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

Don't forget that in Win10 you can use Win + Up/Down Arrow after a side snap to snap to a quarter of the screen (ie Win+Right -> Win+Up will snap to the top right corner)

My current favorite toy is the Win10 virtual desktop. Keep different tasks/projects separate, or slide private work aside when someone comes poking around.

Win + Ctrl + D
Create a new virtual desktop.

Win + Ctrl + Left or Right Arrow
Switch between virtual desktops.

Actually, i use the windows 10 shortcuts a lot, because I think it is very convenient. I think the shortcut of Windows + D is the best shortcut, Because I always open many window when running Windows 10. There are other shortcuts you must to know:

Windows + A Open Action Center

Windows + B Move the Mouse Pointer to the notification area

Windows + C Open Cortana in listening mode

Windows + D Display and hide the desktop

Windows + E Open This PC

Windows + G Open Game bar

Windows + L Lock Windows Desktop

Windows + M Minimize all Windows

Windows + R Open Run Dialog

Windows + U Open Ease of Access Center

Windows + X Open Start Menu

Windows + I Open Windows Settings

Windows + Left Arrow Move the selected windows to left

Windows + Right Arrow Move current windows to right

Windows + Enter Open Narrator

Windows + Home Minimize all windows and restore them with the second hit

Windows + Tab Launch Task View

Windows + Space Change Keyboard layout and Input language

Windows + “– “ Zoom out (Magnifier)

Windows + “+ “ Zoom in (Magnifier)

Windows + Ctrl +D Create a new visual desktop

Windows + Ctrl + F4 Close the visual desktop
