W10 Pro bug: Welcome to W10 Home!

Thu Nov 08, 2018 4:00 pm

smh Microsoft. I have had W10 Pro activated on my machine since, quite literally, release day. Today I get a notification that my copy of Windows 10 Pro is not activated!

What?!

So I google it and apparently there is an activation bug making the rounds telling W10 Pro users that they don't have a Pro key and to troubleshoot from there. Thanks very much Microsoft!

"Update, Nov. 8, 3:36 p.m.: "We’re working to restore product activations for the limited number of affected Windows 10 Pro customers." said Jeff Jones, a senior director at Microsoft."

What a joke.

Very lucky here. Win 7 Pro retail to Win 8.1 Pro to Win 10 Pro, plus Win 7 Pro OEM to Win 10 Pro, and another MSDN Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro...all good.

Fixed

You will be required to take the following steps to reactivate Windows:

Go to Settings (via Action center > All settings or Windows key + i)
Navigate to Update & Security > Activation
Click the link for the troubleshooter
Windows should reactivate as normal, assuming your key or digital license was genuine before all this happened.

Cool, they must have just done it. I did that an hour or two ago and it was still borked.

Just following up. I did what SSK said and everything is peachy now.

Don't mess it up again MS, please.

Ooh! I got it too. I left it for a few hours, saw this thread and followed SSK's suggestion, and it's all resolved, hopefully.

Ugh. Got bit by this bug late on the 6th, dorked around with it and waited overnight but when known valid keys wouldn't work I just nuked and reinstalled. Thanks Microsoft. Yet another result of MS laying off its quality assurance programmers a few years back.

Nice to know pirated software is still easier and less hassle for users than going legit. :P
