OS for Plex Server?

Tue Oct 01, 2019 8:19 am

Hello, guys. Would you recommend me what OS to choose for a Plex Server? I've read positive reviews about Plex on Ubuntu, however still want to be one hundred percent sure before installing the server. Any comments are welcome :)

100% depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to roll for yourself (monitoring scripts, reporting, etc).

If you just want something that works once set up, FreeNAS is a pretty easy start. You can always transfer the databases/data somewhere else if you decide to stand up your own OS.

Is it going to be a dedicated box? I agree with Waco.
For mine, I have the house desktop as the Plex server and the files are stored on the network with a simple low-power Synology NAS.

I’m using mine very lightly, but I’ve got the Plex server running on the Synology NAS. I’m doing any transcoding on the gaming desktop and storing the output on the NAS.

I would say Synology NAS or Ubuntu. Both have worked well for me.

I originally set up Plex on FreeNAS, but their plugin wasn't very good (too many crashes), so I went to Ubuntu. That was few years ago, FreeNAS could be better now. Once I got the Synology NAS I tried it, but I couldn't see any performance difference vs. using Ubuntu+NAS, so I stuck with that. The Linux Plex server just runs, and I never have to touch it.

Thank you guys for your recommendations.

I think I'll follow roncat and will try plex on ubuntu. I've already found the install guide, let's see how it goes.

Thanks again :)

Yeah, I'm in the Ubuntu camp on this one. The RAID/RAID-like storage options for Windows are not great. ZFS all the way!

I also ran it on Ubuntu when I ran a plex server. No complaints. After ditching cable I didn't really need a media server of any kind, so I got rid of it. If I ever get around to ripping all my old discs I'll probably set it up again. It was pretty nifty.
