Having a weird bit of trouble here.

If you plug in a new USB device, you have to go into the device manager and force it to search for drivers, it doesnt do it automatically when the device is connected. After the first time its been installed, it detects properly from then on.

Doesnt matter what the device is, from mice to USB sticks.

Windows XP Home SP2
Celeron D 340

Any thoughts?

Ok I turned on the 'show hidden devices' on the device manager, and found that mdmxsdk is not properly installed, but Im guessing thats just a modem driver.

Im really stuck on this one.

You might need to do a reinstall. You can do it without having to format the hard drive. Did you build the computer or was it a factory build (e.g. Dell)? Just wondering if during the install process setup asked you for your SP2 disk, like it did on mine. I skipped the whole SP2 portion the first time I install Windows on my computer and had three pages worth of problems.

We've formatted this guys computer like 3-4 times, lol

I think he's just an idiot who keeps screwing it up.

One of the front USB ports is kinda screwy, it lets you plug in devices upside down, which causes a power surge on the internal hub and shuts off all the ports on the circuit. I dont think anything is physically screwed, because once you manually install the drivers, they work.

But yea, Ill probably just wipe the damn thing.

Don't think you need to do an actual wipe, just a reinstall. That's fixed a small problem or two before for me.

Have you tried just deleting the all the USB Host Controllers in devmgmt.msc and then let Windows reinstall them? If you're "shorting" things out I'm not surprised they're misbehaing, but that might reset them.

We dont screw around with partial reinstalls, they tend to cause more problems than they fix.

Format & recovery is the way to do it when you're dealing with other peoples machines.
