Hi. What do you mean it won't recognise the floppy drive, does the Icon within My Computer not appear altogether, or does it, but it doesn't allow you to access the floppy drive?

Hi. Ensure that the floppy drive is enabled in the BIOS obviously (you say you've tried this though), which is usually found under Standard Settings, assuming you have the Award BIOS. As you say though, do try swapping the floppy, as it might simply be that the floppy drive has past it's best.

Your floppy cable maybe? Haven't installed any OS (Win98 to XP to Linux) that didn't detect the floppy.

Did you make sure that the cable was not on backwards? If you have it backwards one way, the light stays on. If you have it backwards the other way, the light comes on like you said, but it will not be able to find the drive. This is why I hate non keyed floppy cables, had to flip one around several times to get it in properly so it worked.

Did you check and see if the floppy controller was active in the device manager?

The F1 message from the BIOS will have nothing to do with XP so I don't think reinstalling it will help. If the light stays on or flashes then it might be the cable. Try to use a boot disk if you can to see if it can read a disk outside of windows.

More problems

Tue Mar 18, 2003 4:08 pm

Hi again. dolemitecomputers is right in a way. Windows has full read and write access to the BIOS, and if the BIOS is not detecting the floppy properly due to perhaps a faulty cable, floppy drive, or quite possibly motherboard, or even a BIOS querk......then Windows will read this straight from the BIOS and report the floppy drive as not accessible or not present at all. I think there's more than what meets the eye to this problem.
