random shutdowns

Fri May 02, 2003 2:41 pm

i'll just be doing anything and it will randomly shut down hard.

It all started after i tried to OC my cpu and video card. I couldnt get it stable, so i am back at default speeds. But it still shuts down. Sometimes i get a BSOD.

I'm using win2k sp3.

Do you think it might have damaged some hardware? Or is it a software/driver issue?

My temps are all in normal range

Thanks!

by shut down hard do you mean that it simply completely turns off as if you had pulled the power plug, or that it closes all apps first and goes through the regular shut down procedure.

Yeah, bad RAM did that to me once, too.

You could have damaged your vid card or proc, though--I tried overclocking my 8500 'cause apparently people were having luck o/c-ing them to 300Mhz, but it restarted during a benchmark at that speed, so I reduced it back to default, but the computer would then always restart itself if I ran anything graphics-intensive. I replaced the card, and it worked fine.

Really the thing to do is replace parts, one by one, until the probelm goes away. Hopefully you can find some parts to borrow, otherwise you end up buying another whole system. Wait...that might not be so bad...

It could very well be you power supply as well. Just try removing/replacing components till you find what's wrong.

CompUSA's return policy makes a great troubleshooting tool.

Purchase - not fix - return
Purchase - fix - keep :D

I think all of us do that. Some of us also use TAP as an upgrade crutch.

Case in point: My 9700 Pro went flaky yesterday. I exchanged it for the last one CompUsa had, tonight. According to the terms of TAP, if this one isn't compatible (it's a really old one, might have the AGP 8X bug), then they either give me the price of a 9700 Pro, or they give me an equal or better card. Seeing as they don't have any FX's except for the 5200, and the only other high end ATI they have are AIW9700 Pro's.... I may get stuck doing single monitor on an AIW. :)

Technology Assurance Program.

It basically turns your 14 day return period into a 1, 2, or 3 year return period, for a fee. You pay for TAP when you buy it, and it gets you one replacement. If you want, though, you can get TAP on the replacement card, too. :)

It's not cheap, but it works a lot faster than an RMA, and it sometimes gets you a free upgrade or two.

I bought a GeForce 2 Ultra when they first came out, 500$.

I got a GeForce 3 when they came out 6 months later, plus ~75$ store credit.

I got a GeForce 3 Ti500 for my GF3 and 25$ to replace the expended TAP.

I would have been able to swap up my Ti500 to a Ti4600, but I lost my receipt, and CompUsa couldn't find a record of my purchase (bastards).

Like I said, not cheap, but it does make it possible to skate along the hardware bleeding edge much more cheaply.

do you think it could be hard drive failure? This hard drive is going on 5 years old now.

SOmetimes i get a BSOD with a STOp message... something along the lines of IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL with mention of "ntoskrnl.exe"

I've had flaky video drivers do that kind of thing. Have you tried reinstalling your OS? Perhaps some files became corrupted while oc'ing. That would e free, if you have the cd. Have you done any troublshooting? If you can, try swapping in old components or ones from other systems?
