The GPD can run Linux!!!

Thu May 25, 2017 12:09 am

I have forgotten about the GPD Win handheld computer but seeing this video makes me want to get one:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTSVysKUmXM&t=447s
I think I'll go ahead buy this later this year. Shame about the short battery life and the small 64GB eMMC storage however.

I forgot about it too, and definitely like the sound of that. Mobile OSes are garbage and anything that can be called a proper PC is bigger than ideal for my purposes, and this looks like it might solve that conundrum.

I'm not worried about the tech specs; really any old 4x A53 / 2GB phone would be a fine amount of power if the software side weren't a mess. On paper, this looks all but perfect. What I'll have to go look for at some point are reports on build quality.

From the few reviews I have read, this thing actually does quite well for what it is.

But they're still using that same old Atom? As I said, I don't mind, but that seems like a questionable decision for the more general market.

What are the current Atom cores now, Apollo Lake? Isn't a there low end Pentium M CPU now that can be scaled down to 4.5 TDP?

I was going to say Goldmont should be better, but now that I look, I don't see any Goldmont CPUs with a TDP that low. Airmont is also a bit newer than I had been thinking; I don't keep track of Atom generations like I do for the big cores. While a GPD with a Core-M would be pretty cool, it would also add a lot to the price tag.

Yeah the only reason I'm looking at the Atom now is because of the GPD Win and the Pocket. As far as price goes, the Win is a little bit more than I really want to pay for but I can manage it, but not if it was priced higher.
