I'm rather surprised that Ubuntu doesn't handle microcode by default. It can be a pretty big deal - one time my system got segfault-riddled for no discernible reason, and it turned out to be system libraries trying to use TSX on one of the bugged Haswells. TSX was supposed to have been disabled by a microcode update I had forgotten to set up.
